We were told last week the players were not in agreement with the club on the bonuses to be given out for this season.
The deal the players were offered was they would get £1M for finishing in 17th place and then another million for each place we finished above that.
The argument between players and club was too reminiscent of days of gone by when the players and management never saw eye to eye, and it was getting to be a problem.
But the players knew other PL clubs were offering better terms.
It seems the deadlock was quickly ended by a direct call from owner Mike Ashley to Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles last Thursday.
The new bonus structure was quickly agreed, and now the squad will share £4M if the club finishes in 17th place and avoids relegation.
Mike Ashley – solved the player bonus deadlock
And then an additional £1M for each place above 17th, so for example, if we finish in 10th place that’s £11M to be shared among the players and that’s on top of their already massive wages.
Mike Ashley said over the summer he will not put any more of his own money into the club, but that didn’t stop him from offering the players a £20M bonus for winning the FA Cup next year.
If he is offering the players that, we wonder what Rafa and his coaching staff are on as far as a bonus structure is concerned for this season?
The players and Rafa Benitez himself are happy the matter with the players has been resolved amicably.
This is one of the few times that Mike has managed to fix a problem at the club rather than cause one.
But he still deserves credit for it.
We hope it continues and he would do well to fully support Rafa Benitez in this January’s transfer window.
Getting three good players through the door would be a lift for everybody concerned at the club, including Rafa Benitez.
And as we all know he is crucial to Newcastle’s future – he is Newcastle’s future!
What do you think?
