Newcastle Scouts Watching Players For Possible January Signings

The Shields Gazette is reporting today that Newcastle had a scout at last night’s Champions League game between Benfica and CSKA.

Benfica lost at home after being 1-0 ahead, and CSKA ended their run of 10 matches without a Champions League victory by beating the Lisbon giants.

Some other clubs were represented at the game including AC Milan, Manchester United, Barcelona, Brighton, Watford and Huddersfield.

One player we were interested in at Benfica throughout the summer was central midfielder Andreas Samaris, who was an unused sub in the 2-1 win for the Russians in Lisbon.

28-year-old Newcastle target Andreas Samaris of Benfica

Newcastle were reported to have bid €15M for the 29 times capped Greek International according to O Jogo in early August, but Benfica held out for €20M, and no deal was done.

It could be we are continuing to look at the 28-year-old, but there are a number of other Benfica players who could be interesting Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez.

Andreas has a contract at Benfica until the summer of 2019, and maybe Benfica will drop their demands in their required fee for their central midfielder.

We hope our scouts will be active from now until January and that we can bring in up to three players in the January transfer window to strengthen the squad.

Newcastle we could also sell players in January such as those who are surplus to requirements like Henri Saivet, Sadio Haidara, and Jack Colback.

Comments welcome.

Cant see us going for Samaris anymore, though a top player to partner Merino is still required. Amazing how just 4 games into a loan and already Merino is the star player in midfield, really hope the club havent dropped a bollock and have the permanent deal waterproof.

Would like to see Aarons getting some minutes soon, think he should be the backup wide player currently ahead of Murphy, think he needs easing in slowly at PL level.

Would like to see us get to the point where Aarons is match fit and can try Ritchie in the 10 and have Aarons and Atsu wide – cant see it happening but would be nice to try something other than Perez or Perez or Perez…

The players are all making the right noises about the commitment needed, the all-for-one spirit and for once I believe them.

Same application against Stoke and we can gain another vital 3pts.

Only change I think will happen is Atsu for Murphy.

jd dubai at 1 arons played 45 mins against norwich u23 wich is about his standard. instead of being on twitter, being in papers for being pictured in bed with someone who accused a footballer of rape or being charged for a fracas in a club he should concentrate on improving his play.

Agreed with your team selection although I would like to see Yedlin in for Manquillo, if he is fit enough

JD – did you read that Aarons had a mare first half for
the under-23s this week and was subbed at half time?

Hasn’t made the 1st team bench recently. Doubtful if
he is up to starting reet now.

    On the number 10 spot

If Perez is to be dropped I’d try Merino there before anyone.

The lad can pass and carry the ball and knows when to do which. He has good quick feet is more than decent in the air and is very mobile. He’s good in the tackle and would be a excellent help to the midfield chasing down and disrupting opposition. He also seems a all round team player.

I’d leave Shelvey in the midfield as he’s not very mobile can be reckless in the challenge and I think he’s to lazy to chase down and work hard for 90 mins for the team. I think his passing suits midfield more than the 10 spot.

All that said I can’t see Rafa changing it or dropping Perez, if it ain’t broke!

I’ll also add Shelveys attitude wouldn’t help him much against a couple of clever centre half’s niggling him for 90mins.

Yeah i know, just hoping he can get his head together, still has time on his side and needs a full season injury free and concentrating on football. Really think no10 is the key position right now that we dont have quality, was the same last season too and despite that Rafa never went with 2 up front even though Perez and Diame were poor as the 10.

Only playing Ritchie there is an alternative to Perez for me if we wont go with 2 up top, and cant see Ritchie moving unless Aarons or Murphy are ready.

If you only see Rich Tea as a alternative I’m glad you’re not the manager lol.

I don’t think I could take the shock if Perez was dropped then our best winger was moved to his place. It would be a stupid decision for any manager, weaken your side and try/Hope he could play there. I don’t think he could myself.

Its all opinion though, would be good if we could all see our favoured 11 play a match in our selected formation. We get smashed lol.

I agree with what you have said to JD. Ritchie is playing far too well out wide to bring him in to no.10. I do think someone other than perez or diameobi shoild be tried, though.

    Hibbit.

I’d be tempted to try merino and shelvey first. Whichever looks least viable would then play along side hayden. If niether take to it, then possibly atsu. He’s young and may turn out to be more suited to a central role than out wide.

All I know is, Rafa needs to solve this over the next few games. Either a better fit is found, or Perez ups his game and becomes consistant. Diameobi should only be used deeper and not too often.

such a shame we didn’t get a number 10 over the line in the summer window
we always have to make do square pegs in round holes just hope Rafa can find somebody in January
till then it looks like its trial and error no body actually jumps out for the shirt

If you’re to move a player you need a equal or better player in that position or it’s pointless. None of the players we have to replace Rich Tea are good or consistent enough to even consider moving him.

If we moved Merino Shelvey takes his place and it doesn’t weaken the team, I’d be surprised if Rafa even considered moving Rich Tea or dropping Perez.

Don’t see Perez being dropped honestly, do think the criticism is over the top though he does need to be better in front of goal he could of easily scored 2 already 1 against Huddersfield and the chance through on goal against Swansea.

What I’d like to see is Joselu and Mitro with Joselu behind, I think it’s natural for Joselu to come for the ball and he’s got the strength and footballing brain to link play, combined with mitro we could seriously bully teams and have major threat aerially
