Predicted One Change In Starting Line-Up Against Stoke City

Rafa gave a positive update on the injuries at Newcastle during his press conference this afternoon, and only Paul Dummett and Sadio Haidara are not fit for the game.

That means Chancel Mbemba is fit after picking up a slight hamstring strain last week playing for DR Congo in World Cup qualifying, so that’s good news for the club.

There will not be too many changes made for the game against Stoke City tomorrow, but left-back will be an important position for Newcastle to combat Stoke’s dangerous winger Xherdan Shaqiri, the 64 times capped Swiss International (20 International goals).

There is a chance that Chancel could be brought back in to replace Jesus Gamez at left-back, who was brought in at Swansea and did well in the second half.

But we will go with just one change for the game tomorrow against Stoke with Christian Atsu coming back in for young Jacob Murphy on the wing.

The competition between Jesus Gamez if he starts – and Shaqiri – will be one to watch early in the game.

Christian Atsu – could return to the side tomorrow?

Rafa will know the 25-year-old Swiss International has been showing some good form of late for Stoke.

Here’s the team we expect to start against Stoke City tomorrow in what promises to be another tough game for the lads.

Manquillo Lascelles (c) Clark Gamez
Hayden Merino
Ritchie Perez Atsu
Joselu

Isn’t it funny how 2 wins in a row can make you feel that you can beat anyone on the day! The elation it gives you……… I live in the US now and was trying to explain to folk over here about the football culture back in Newcastle (they are all Timbers Fans) and they just don’t get it…… it took me ages to work out…. its not just the winning but the jeopardy of relegation which they don’t have in the MLS. It all adds to that feel good factor.

    jamesnufc86 seriously no Clarke?

    Elliott
    Yedders Lascelles Clarke Games
    Ritchie Merino Hayden Atsu
    Perez
    Joselu

Would love to see us start with Joselu and Gayle, but there’s little chance of that.
Perez knows he needs to produce to stop Gayle starting in his place and I expect him to score and create 1 tomorrow.
I’d take a 1-0 to us right now, but to be fair anything but a loss will keep up the momentum.

I feel Stoke will look to pull players out of position, cause confusion and cause more problems than Swansea. It will be another difficult game that will likely be nervous grind, so the crowd will have to be careful not to let the tension get to them. On the whole fans are good at showing their appreciation for defensive play, keeping possession and applying pressure on the opposition. However if the opposition happen to score, our hope and belief will have to remain resolute.

Reckon shelvey should wait for his opportunity since merino has the shirt right now and is in a good run of form. I personally see the midfield as Hayden competing with diame and merino competing with shelvey. Not a fan of the idea suggesting to move merino to number 10. Although he could do that position well and could possibly do the dm position well, he’s much more effective at the role he is currently in. He can dictate a game and transition from defence to attack. For shelveys qualities I have always mentioned that he cannot dictate the tempo as he only has one speed to play the game.

Don’t like the idea of shoehorning a player in the team just because he is a good player. Best 11 players do not make a best 11 team. Plus by moving merino forward, you lose the ball winning abilities that he has been showing and will not be replaced by shelvey.

Wouldn’t change the centre back pairing either. Unfortunate for lejuene but lascelles and Clark do have a good partnership and are doing well. Would be criminal to break that up right now.

Just seen Rafa’s presser and he seemed to intimate that Shelvey was competing directly with Merino. He did go on to list all the other midfielders who he was also competing with, but for me it was clear; it is Shelvey or Merino and not both together. In that case he probably has to stick with Merino? If he was the best choice last week he almost certainly will be the best choice this week?

I think, like most folks, that Atsu will start.People grumble about Perez, me included but he remains our best option at No 10.

Can’t see him disrupting Lascelles and Clarke to rush back Lejuerne who won’t be match fit.

Only other question then is left back and I think I would stick with Gamez, only because he looked comfortable with his left foot. Can certainly make a case for Mbemba, Clarke did well and is naturally left footed but it means another change in the middle. Last(?) option, bring in Yedlin and switch Manquillo; too much fiddling.

    Elliot
    Manquillo Lascelles Clarke Gamez
    Ritchie Merino Hayden Atsu
    Perez

Tough test, going for a hard fought 2-1 win

Is anyone else positive about lascelles signing a long term deal?
I reckon it is a positive sign that Rafa is planning to stay beyond this season as the first thing I would ask for is reassurances from Rafa that he isn’t planning to leave.

The only players i would be tempted to drop would be murphy/arrons mandingo/yedlin perez/anyone but diame
Would like to see merino and shelvey play together but the midfield is ok atm i also would not drop hayden as he is a grafter who just had a poor game. Rafa has them working together well atm and breaking that up is a risk.

For me, keep holding Shelvey back. Merino is doing a good job, and though Hayden didn’t have his best game against Swans I would still like to see him start alongside Mikel. They will have their hands full with Stoke’s likely bruiser tactics so maybe not the time to have the Shelvey / Merino show tomorrow
