Rafa Benitez – We Deserved More From The Game

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez was disappointed with the defeat at Brighton today after Newcastle had enough chances to have won the game – but the game could have gone either way – it was that close.

And we came out on the losing side for the first time in four games.

There was a question about the Brighton goal since there seemed to be a foul on Mbemba when the free kick came over – but that sounds too much like sour grapes – so we’ll leave it there.

It was Tomer Header who acrobatically put the ball into the net after 51 minutes.

But it was poor marking by the Newcastle defense, and we could now see changes against Liverpool next Sunday afternoon.

That will be the last Premier League game (4:30 pm kickoff) before the two-week International break, so we don’t want to suffer another defeat in that match.

Rafa Benitez at the Amex today

After the loss today this is what a disappointed Rafa Benitez told Sky Sports:

“We did enough to get a point at least,” “Both teams had chances. We had a lot of control and good chances at the end.”

“The goal for me was a foul, pushing and blocking. But you cannot change the decision.”

“We deserved more. We are still without too much experience in the Premier League. We have to manage these situations a bit better.”

It was a disappointing defeat, but we’ll get over it.

Yeah Hayden was poor today but still doesn’t hide the fact he’s our best DM, he won some crucial last ditch tackles early in the game. Especially from corners, he’ll be needed alot more next week and Shelvey in place of him for Liverpool game would be a disaster in my eyes.

Liverpool with non stop movement and Shelvey in place of Hayden plays straight into there hands

    Brighton Vs Newcastle

    Elliott 7.2

    1st Half:
    Great saves, poor distribution.

    2nd Half:

Excellent reaction save off the line, better distribution.

    Yedlin 7

    1st Half:

Defensively flawless, good tracking back after adding extra options getting forward. Won a few headers.

    2nd Half:

Worked hard, melting things going up front.
Good, honest reaction getting straight up after being stamped on. Well within his right to complain but he didn’t. Good man. Leave it to the FA.

    Lascelles 5.8

    1st Half:

Organising defense left a lot to be desired. Too loose in marking.

    2nd Half:

Got involved and added an outlet when playing back, but still nervy in defense.

    Clark 5.7

    1st Half:

Okay in defense, did what he had to do. Usually a silent hero in the back.

    2nd Half:

Not as decisive in getting the ball out and passed the ball to an attacking player, but largely did what should be done.

    Mbemba 6.9

    1st Half:

Excellent involvement going foward. At times it looked like we had an extra steady midfielder. Very good defensively too.

    2nd Half:

Fairly decent in defense but started getting less involved going forward.

    Hayden 5.4

    1st Half:

    Didn’t really notice him.

    2nd Half:

Not effective and didn’t add much to the team.

    Merino 7.9

    1st Half:

His passing, movement, wriggling out of tight positions on the ball, honest hard work in tracking back and interceptions made him look classy.

    2nd Half:

Worked hard to keep things ticking over in midfield. Always available as an outlet. Excellent all-round first game. My man of the match for us.

    Ritchie 6.9

    1st Half:

Struggled to get the team into gear but always worked to do so. Tried to get involved and get the team pushing forward but needed more from his team mates.

    2nd Half:

Same as the first half. Did everything he could but there was something missing. His deadball deliveries were not on par with his usual classy balls in, including his shots at goal.

    Perez 5.5

    1st Half:

Almost as anonymous as Hayden. I’m not sure what he did if at all. The only time he raised my attention was his fluffed shot over the crossbar. Seems like he wasn’t expecting the pass from Mbemba.

    2nd Half:

Much better display. Provided good link-up play and put in some challenges to try to win the ball back.

    Atsu 5.7

    1st Half:

Worked hard, as always. Always looking to get involved but just lacked that final ball.

    2nd Half:

Worked hard again but when he wasn’t running into cul-de-sacs, his end product was largely poor aside from one low driven 45 into the box. Takes him too long to make a decision. Just doesn’t seem as clever on the ball and suffers from delayed reactions.

    Joselu 5.4

    1st Half:

His hold-up play always adds that extra dimension that we needed, but really needs work on his finishing. If I sound as obvious as Owen or Shearer, it’s only because it’s the only chance he had, but would have made all the difference to the game.

    2nd Half:

Tried to get more involved in midfield including tracking back to defend. I respect that in a centre forward. But I am starting to become concerned about his confidence up front after fluffing so many chances. He SHOULD be better as he has good technical ability.

    *Substitutes*

    Shelvey 7

    1st Half: N/A

2nd Half: Good impact when he came on. Looked hungry to prove himself. Added that extra dimension we needed, surprisingly not in his passes but in his driving runs and urgency.

    Gayle 5.2

    1st Half: N/A

2nd Half: Had little influence to the game and had no impact. This could be largely due to the fact that Brighton started to sit back by the time Gayle came on, a style of play he struggles with as he doesn’t win balls or hold up when the defense is playing as tight as they did by then. But wriggled nicely to free himself for a shot at goal, albeit a tame one.

    Gamez 6.4

    1st Half: N/A

2nd Half: Took over where Mbemba left off I adding extra options.

    Newcastle Team Performance:

Good, honest effort but we didn’t show enough going forward. When we did, we wasted a one or two decent chances to steal points from a team who largely deserved all 3 points. Technically, we didn’t look terrible but we lacked the urgency needed to come back and when we showed that, it came too late.

This is exactly the kind of game in which we need a proven goal scorer. We don’t play possession football and when we come up against a team who played the way Brighton did today, we need to be more clinical up front. We need to have the quality striker who can win us the points from a few games here and there that we don’t technically deserve to win when we’re not firing on all cylinders.

Not terribly upset about the position we find ourselves in the league as we were always bound to drop points against the top 10 teams. But we should be fighting for maximum points from our direct rivals.

However, very good performance for Chris’ team and congratulations are in order to him and his side. They deserved the win.

Disappointing but truth is we’ll lose a lot of games away from home in this league. Thought we deserved the draw but like Huddersfield away, it wasn’t to be. How we manage the home games is what will decide our survival hopes. I think now is the time to bring back Mitrovic but agree that Shelvey instead of Hayden might see us over run next week but I still believe Shelvey could play but in a 4-5-1 formation?

Merino is king. Best young player to grace shirt since Gazza. Rolls Royce Midfielder. Shame options for the kid to pass to are lacking. Buy of the century. Perez needs dropping, getting weaker by the game
    In Rafa we trust.

For me, the most important positions we need improvements in are our striking options and a left winger. Joselu has the clever movements, good hold up play as well as linking up with the midfield. Gayle’s movement is good and although it is yet to be proven if he can score goals as consistently at this level as he did last season, he just cannot hold up. When he plays, the whole team looks like it has a hole up front. He’s best suited to playing alongside a stronger CF, but thst isn’t going to happen. Mitro can score as he’s proven for Serbia and he can hold up, win balls and link up, his movement isn’t as good as either of the others.

Our left wing situation worries me. We rarely have direct attacking play coming from our centre midfielders so our only options are out wide or from set pieces. This is a concern as Ritchie is our only winger who adds creative prowess. Atsu works he’s butt off but he is indecisive and most tines lacks quality crosses. He’s slow slow to react and indecisive. I’d like to see Aarons given a chance as he can beat players, he’s strong, can score, he’s unpredictable and does deliver some quality balls into the box.

Centre mid isn’t a main concern but with the kind of balls Shelvey likes to play, we need a speedy striker, or clever wingers. We only have one 1st team quality winger in Ritchie.

So Shelvey doesn’t help too much there. Merino is class and can thread clever through balls to the striker, but Joselu isn’t banging them in. So we need a more direct central midfielder who can get forward or cause problems. Perez, although he has improved very slightly over the last two games isn’t that player.

And obviously we need another left back. I just worry for Mbemba because he’s been doing so well in my opinion. But as soon as we get another left back, Mbemba will be wasted as he is currently our fourth choice centre back.

Ten more shots, more corners more shots on target, one if those days. Manquillo and Joselu are who he had to sign not wanted to. Unfortunately Joselu doesn’t look like he’s going to get a lot of goals, his West Ham one was very fortunate and it is what it is.

Joselu was brought for his hold up play to bring midfielders in to the game but it was non existent today dunk/Duffy had him well in there pocket, just feel Gayle would have been perfect today, And would have finished the chance joke-lu had today and the 3 against stoke, even the one he scored against w.ham was lucky, that said 6 games in and 8th place I’ll take that all day long, roll on Liverpool, St James will be rocking HWTL!!!!!

We lack goals but we knew this coming out of the window. We’re set up well so we should be competing in most games. Hard to nick them with such a lack of firepower. Still, we’re stronger than expected. Played well today.

    beer,
I think Shelvey and Merino will start next game as well the way the game changed after he came on. Hayden will be gutted and will up his training 100%. What a shame Joselu never got a brace the other week and one this afternoon so Mitro wasn’t even an option, also a shame that we never dominated so that Shelvey couldn’t stew on the bench as well.

They talked about that on Total Sport during the week, they reckoned Shelvey would be wasted as a No 10, best off splaying his long passes about. I think asking Merino to be more defensive with Shelvey in his normal role might work.

Was Murphy bought to satisfy the o session with young U25 talent and compromise, was he bought because Rafa thought he had all of the money left from last season’s budget. Who knows, we’ll never know until Rafa writes a book. The horrible and surly Steve Gerrard actually refuted a claim by Rafa in one of his books on Alonso last night on BT sport.

The big thing with this match is we weren’t set up to come from behind. The squad was picked to grind out a 0-0 draw or possibly to get one and hold tight defensively. When we went behind we had very little creativity going forward to unlock Brighton. Shelvey’s passes could help unlock defenses, with Atsu and Ritchie both being quite pacy. I would personally push Merino forward into the 10, and keep Hayden and Shelvey as holding mids.

Who knows mate but we unfortunately don’t have the luxury of having that amount of capital sat on the bench when it so desperately needed to be spent on the first 11
Personally if we would have played like we did the last 15 minutes we would have won the game, But apart from that spell I thought Brighton shaded it.
If Mitro isn’t deemed good enough in Rafa’s eyes and doesn’t see Gayle as an automatic choice in the Pl, Then a forward should have a priority above any position that warranted strengthening.
Like all the pundits were saying and I agree.. Goals keep you in the Pl.And after 6 games our Cb is joint top scorer, That says everything really

    Jazzy,
Was Lucas Perez a realistic target?, you obviously know that our world class manager realises that we needed a top striker, do you think if he’d have been given a straight choice between Obertan and Lucas Perez or Joselu and Murphy he’d have chosen the latter.
