Rafa Benitez – We Deserved More From The Game

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez was disappointed with the defeat at Brighton today after Newcastle had enough chances to have won the game – but the game could have gone either way – it was that close.

And we came out on the losing side for the first time in four games.

There was a question about the Brighton goal since there seemed to be a foul on Mbemba when the free kick came over – but that sounds too much like sour grapes – so we’ll leave it there.

It was Tomer Header who acrobatically put the ball into the net after 51 minutes.

But it was poor marking by the Newcastle defense, and we could now see changes against Liverpool next Sunday afternoon.

That will be the last Premier League game (4:30 pm kickoff) before the two-week International break, so we don’t want to suffer another defeat in that match.

Rafa Benitez at the Amex today

After the loss today this is what a disappointed Rafa Benitez told Sky Sports:

“We did enough to get a point at least,” “Both teams had chances. We had a lot of control and good chances at the end.”

“The goal for me was a foul, pushing and blocking. But you cannot change the decision.”

“We deserved more. We are still without too much experience in the Premier League. We have to manage these situations a bit better.”

It was a disappointing defeat, but we’ll get over it.

    Jazzy,
I’m praying Murphy turns out good, I’m just not convinced that Rafa put all his eggs in the basket on the strength of him being the new Neymar, I believe he still had more money and bought him as a co.promise due to his age instead of Townsend to keep the model happy. My opinion of course.

15 17 mill a better striker could do have been found but who
We were linked with 100s of players but not many would have been on rafas list

Whilst I am sure Joselu was a punt it would have been a calculated one

Gayle has goals in him but with him in the side we look at poor team

It’s funny how people say we lack creativity with exactly the same team as we had last week. That was at home btw. However it is also physiological that if a team know their main man can’t put the chances away it starts to have a knock on effect, I hope there’s no substance to those two tw@ts Sound as and He has words and that goals will come from a striker.

Mitro is back in contention for a start next weekend. Perez seems to play better with Mitro. Joselu just needs to compose himself and he will bag a few this season. Mitro is my top scorer. Don’t let me down kid. Nows ya chance!!

Agreed. Now is Mitro’s time to grow up, and deliver!

Merino is a find. Each game he has played is revealing that he is the real thing!

If we beat Liverpool next week then this week’s setback will be a distant memory!

Sorry to disagree with you Rafa but we didn’t deserve more from the game. We were dross. An unbelievable number of unforced turnovers. Our strikers wouldn’t score on an empty goal. Really poor attack. I think Hoser Loo has started his last game for a while with Mitro due back and Gayle fit. Perez was useless. Why does he keep getting included? I would have made changes at the half. Shelvey made a difference straight away. I hope we don’t play like that against Liverpool or it will be a 3-0 or 4-0 thumping for us.

We concede far too much possession. And Brighton looked determined to make something of it. We can’t sit back so much. It’s just not going to work at the Prem level. The Brighton keeper could have had a nap.

Rafa is suppose to be a tactical genius, so why is he still playing dip shit Perez and then brings on Gayle to help him, they can’t play together, Play merino, shelvey or Ritchie in the no10 role, it’s not frigging rocket science, got away with it in the championship.

Hoser Loo has started his last game until he starts scoring as a sub. Rafa is kidding himself if he thinks we deserved a point. That was poor. The changes he made were good but too late. Shelvey should have been on at the half. I know it means playing with only 1 holding MF but we weren’t in it until late. A very disappointing game for Ritchie as well. Hoser Loo should be sitting on at least 3 goals by now with the chances he’s had.

For Liverpool start without Perez and use 2 holding MF. Mitro and Gayle up front. Shelvey in behind.

The stamp was terrible. He should be given a 3 match ban like Mitro was. Definite intent to injure.

Jimiley wrote a withering post a couple of threads back, that while too harsh on individual players I think otherwise rings true. We are going to have a scrap on our hands getting to 40 points. We have Hayden, Atsu, Dummett or similar and Joselu, all in the same team, and nothing off the bench better. The rest of the staring 11 is only marginally superior.

Some players will improve, some won’t, but in the meantime we will drop points. If it weren’t for Rafa, we’d be one of half a dozen you’d clearly earmark for the drop, particularly since Huddersfield and Brighton, the other two promoted clubs look half decent too, and it’s very difficult to see all three staying up. We’re a side in transition, but we do need a couple in January, and they must be genuine upgrades.

MoTD’s clearly got the hot’s for Brighton and so much so that they interviewed Hughton and Sidwell at length. They gave Rafa about a minute during which he referred to Mbemba being pushed in the lead up to their goal – no comments.

The Beeb’s to talk about us later so we’ll see if there’s anything made of the clear stamp on Joselu and the push on Mbemba. Can’t sew it happening after Brighton’s hospitality!

I’d love to see Joselu in more of a #10 position. He drops deep quite a lot, and plays the channels, and his play is a lot more intelligent than Perez, so why not? Worst case scenario, we end up playing with two up top.

We’ll, the Beeb interviews Lascelles about the match in general. But, and no surprise given MoTD was presented from the Amex, not a peep about two incidents that involved us. Had the potential fouls been committed by any if our players, they would’ve made a meal of it.

But, as the show came from the Amex, it’d be most rude of the Beeb to be critical of their host!

Why do we care if BBC show the stamp or talk about it or not? It was discussed after the game today. It’s done move on, Hemed should get charged but if he’s doesn’t it won’t affect us directly as we don’t play them.

I don’t get why fans are so eager to build a us against them case or as if it’s a conspiracy of some sort. Mitro deserved his ban and so did Shelvey, we have no one to blame but ourselves.

The udders lad should have got sent off from his kick on mbemba, Ritchie should have got sent off for his against Swansea. Hemed should have seen red today but it wouldn’t have affected the game, we simply weren’t good enough to get a win.

Perez has certain technical skills and an intuitiveness that sets him apart. He does everything asked of him but has that bit more inventiveness that no one else can offer at 10. I think this is why Rafa likes him, actually more accurately, that’s exactly why I do. He’s not a top third epl attacking mid or withdrawn striker, but he might well be in a year or two, and hopefully for us.

You miss the point about the attention our misdemeanours are given by the Beeb. Were it not for the Beeb, the FA wouldn’t have acted against Mitro. Yes, I agree he would’ve seen a card – had the ref seen it but he didn’t and were it not for the Beed he wouldn’t have been banned.

Tonight, the Beeb chose not to even show the stamp which occurred in the Amex Stadium – where MoTD was presented in its entirety.

Runaway, let’s hope the FA act on Sky’s reporting of the incident.

Liverpool are way better than Brighton who are equal to us, a big test. But it’s 11 vs 11 and we will get a couple chances. Put them in Mitrovic and Gamez 😉

Does anyone know the deal with Mitrovic? Can’t remember f he was still banned for yesterday but I think he’s got to be in the team soon. Just watching him for Serbia convinced me that he deserves a run as CF.

This game reminded me a lot of last season’s performances where we were very slow in build up and showed no real creativity or invention in any play really. I was surprised Ayoze didn’t get subbed off, he contributed very little.

Merino is looking classier every game but I’m worried about Hayden- he is looking like he is really struggling in the Premier league and doesn’t seem to be able to do what he did last season in a much, much higher quality league- especially in terms of first touch and keeping the ball.

The most disappointing bit though was when we reverted into what I call the style of “Pardew’s passing football”: that’s what I call when we pass the ball back and forth across the defenders very slowly until someone simply hits a long hopeful ball and gives it back to the opposition when we wait till we have the ball back and repeat it yet again.

I gave it that title because Pardew always talked as if his teams play this slick, classy passing football despite them always basically doing that same thing- thinking those laborious passes side to side in our own half make you a beautiful passing team despite them always preceding a lumped up percentage ball!

I find it the most irritating football to watch. It always just looks bereft of any ideas.

With perez and joselu we have no real invention or creativity in attack. Which is why we cannot sustain pressure. The moment the ball is in the final third, we will lose it.

As we create very little in a match, our strikers must score in at least 1 out of 2 clear cut chances.

For this, I don’t think joselu is the answer. He looks poor.

    Morning lads!

Such a shame last night, but that’s life for you…we just need to move on and stay confident!

I haven’t had time catch up on all events from the game yet so were Brighton really the better team?

It seems from what I could gather that Atsu, Hayden again had a rather poor game and Hoosy Loo was wasteful once again?

Shelvey seems to have had a good game once he came on? If it shows Merino and Shelvey can work together than that’s at least good 🙂

    Morning Ron
