Our Man Of The Match – Newcastle’s New Star

Spanish U21 International Mikel Merino was easily our best player in the 1-0 defeat against Brighton yesterday at the Amex Stadium.

Just like our last two games were very close this game was just as close, and it was really anybody’s game.

Rafa is right to say there’s nothing between a lot of team in the Premier League and the small things really matter during a game and practicing them in training.

We went to sleep for a corner early in the second half and that ultimately cost us the game.

We didn’t win yesterday, but we hope the manager’s management excellence will allow us to win most of the games against the bottom 14 teams in the league.

If we can do that we could finish as high as 7th in the league table and that would be a good foundation to build on for next season.

Mikel Merino – Newcastle’s young star

Mikel Merino is a big favorite of ours, and he is our Man of the Match with 62% of the vote.

And the mature youngster is fast becoming a superstar at Newcastle for one so young.

And after the game yesterday he made an excellent comment on nufcTV:

“Not everything is bad when you lose and not everything is good when you win.”

For some of us when we lose it’s a complete and utter disaster, and when we win, it’s just fabulous.

🙂

Rob Elliot made some crucial saves for us yesterday and is second in the voting with 13%, and he’s been in good form for us this season.

It will be interesting to see if Rafa still wants a new goalkeeper brought in next summer if Rob keeps up this form throughout the season.

I suspect there’s going to be lots of interesting debate over the next week about how we tackle Liverpool on Sunday. I know it’s how we are more comfortable playing but IMO we need to not sit back too much and let them come on to us. Their defence is under pressure for a string of iffy performances but they are very likely to score a goal so we need to get at them too. We will need at least a couple to have any chance to win this game I think.
Who do we put in the middle of the park with Merino? I worry about us controlling the centre if we put Shelvey there.

Mark…I believe you can make chances regardless of the team winning and a player doing well…each game is different and sometimes you just need a different player.

That said I just wonder if Hoosy Loo cannot be dropped on current form before one of the other strikers prove to be better shouldn’t we at least try one of them and see?

This guy HAS to be played further up the field
Using Shelvey in front of the defence
with either Hayden or M’bemba alongside
He was electric for Spain in the last international break
used in a more advanced role.
He’ll bring more out of either Mitro or Joselu ,doing that.

So we drop Joselu for a striker who is in form and has hit the ground running…..erm, who would that be then? Gayle runs, fair enough, but seems to do little else, where as Mitro hasn’t so much hot the ground running, but rather hit the face elbowing 😀

I would still see Joselu has looked more likely to get a goal than Gayle and Mitro. Deffo give mitro half an hour maybe, but he has not done any more than Joselu to deserve the start.

Deja vu – Huddersfield/Brighton all to uncanny

Same – Brighton game as Huddersfield game. we created the best chance first half in both games – keeper pulls off excellent save – could of been 1-0 up.

Both games got the wrong decision from ref – studs on Mbemba – stamping on Yedlin – nowt done.

same result – same colours , same tactics

    Uncanny !

    There was undoubtedly an untypical
    lethargy about the Toon yesterday
Rafa will be aware of it
Perhaps the journey to the south coast on
a Sunday with a slightly later kick off ?
We passed well and looked lively for the first 20 minutes
If it had been a rugby side I would have said they
looked as if they had over-trained , which can happen

Joselu and Gayle for me, put them under pressure. They can’t defend for toffee.

Regardless of the result, we are doing far better than most expected. 3 wins in 6 games is excellent. 3 defeats that only conceded a total of 4 goals.

I can’t wait for Sunday. To be there at St James’ in all it’s glory cannot be described. Only when you hear the crowd roar can you appreciate and understand this great club.

We can beat the bindippers. I hope we play Ritchie as a #10. This lad is everywhere and the biggest influence on our game.

    I’d love this:

    Elliott

    Yedlin – Lascelles – Clark – Gamez

    Shelvey – Merino

    Atsu – Ritchie – Murphy

Joselu (with Gayle on as sub)

Mark…I dunno, but I would like to try Mitro a few games and if doesn’t deliver then shouldn’t we at least consider Gayle?

There’s a big difference ion starting a game and getting 60 minutes minimum and coming on from the bench and getting 20 minutes tops…and chasing a game!

I know it’s not up to us – that’s been made clear oh so many times – but I wouldn’t mind Rafa started trying something else like he has has stated he willing to in an earlier interview

Joselu or mitrovic up front, not gayle, i think Rafa would get the best out gayle if he played behind one of those two.
