Brighton & Hove Albion’s Tomer Hemed has been banned for three games for stamping on the calf of Newcastle’s DeAndre Yedlin.
We compliment DeAndre for not rolling around in agony after the stamp as some (most) players would have done – but he got up and got on with the game.
And justice was done – and the FA made the correct decision – so we cannot grumble about that.
This is what DeAndre said after the match about the stamp:
“I thought he stamped on my calf but didn’t see what happened.
“Maybe it was accidental.” “I was in the mix of things.”
“Whatever it was it’s not important.”
“We are disappointed but take the positives from today and look at what we did wrong.”
The stamp was as obvious as Jonjo Shelvey’s stamp in the Spurs game and Aleksandar Mitrovic’s elbow in the West Ham game that got those players three game bans too.
Hemed’s stamp on Yedlin
But surprisingly Hemed has said he was not guilty of violent conduct.
Pull the other leg – it’s got bells on!
This is what Hamed said after he was banned for three games.
“I accept the decision against me but do not agree with it and I am devastated to miss three matches.
“I would never go out to injure a fellow professional on purpose, and those of my friends and team-mates who know me, know that this is not in my nature.
“I will use the time to get fitter, stronger and come back hungrier to score more goals for Brighton in the Premier League.”
Sometimes it’s best to just to fess up and get on with it, but he will be a big loss for Brighton in their next three games.
The stamp came with only three minutes to play so even if the referee had sent Hemed off it wouldn’t have mattered much to the result.
We would have preferred Tomer to have done it early in the first half – as long as the referee saw it.
🙂

Comment #41Very true Jesper, pull on the shirt , instant world beater in some eyes.
Ibiza, i was just stating my position, before it gets taken out of context, and we will have to agree to disagree on Lascelles, i think he has peaked , he cannot organise the defence, it’s nearly always him dropping back and playing people in side. like i have said many times i don’t need him as a captain off the pitch, that’s what the manager is for.
Hibbit.
Mbemba was sitting on the bench, it’s not like there was no cover for him, and believe me his hernia would be no where near Ibizas state, he would have regular scans on it to see what state it was in.
when he scored his goals this season, to me it showed what a nuptie he is, he should have kept quite, and maybe profited more from them situations, but no he wanted to tell the world how clever he was. not smart in my book

Comment #42Catchy…That’s fair enough. We’re entitled to our own opinions.
Mbemba not playing last season was a bit of a head scratcher. I can only put it down to Rafa not thinking he was up for the Championship, for whatever reason. At the end of the day, he got the job done, so all’s good.
It’ll be interesting to see how the CB position evolves over the season. At least we now have some decent options.
Jesper…I had a double hernia a few years back too. Still, I wont accept it’s anything to do with my health or lifestyle 🙂

Comment #43Martoon, I take your point, but my point is he had already looked down and had seen where Yedlin’s leg was, then deliberately looked way in the hope of getting away with the ‘stamp’ and claiming it was accidental.
In any event you are right, one of our rivals loses one of their better players for 3 games. Pity they didn’t give him an extra one for denying it!

To suggest Saivet played poorly for us in the past is a bit harsh in my view. From what I can remember, he looked ok in a poor team; showed some promise and didn’t embarrass himself. I feel he’s more a victim of internal politics and relatively high wage. He was bought in the January desperation shop, and I’m guesssing he was not a Mclaren choice and suffered some passive-aggressive, point making Mcrevenge.

Comment #52Heres another theory about lascelles. That he isn’t that bad after all, did well to play through an injury last season wherein his manager preferred an injured lascelles to the fit alternative.
Also, rather than being a numpty, knowing full well any manager worth a pl job would have noticed he had scored two goals from set pieces, was asked by Benitez to put it out there to make sure there was the possibility he would keep doing that, thereby forcing opposition managers to factor defending him into their tactics and constructing their options. Now they will be forced to prepare for set pieces in every game while Benitez might choose another strike option.
Just a few thoughts. I’m sure if lascelles was playing for Burnley and nodding them in catchy would be wondering why we weren’t after him. 🙂

I’m thinking your’e comment about him having peaked has to a tongue in cheek one.
23 is young for a CB and they tend to get better as they get older, another couple of years and he’ll be a fixture in the England team, imo.
And we’ll have MU, Chelsea and others offering big bucks for him, just hope we are in a position to be able to resist their offers. Not trying to start another MA debate by the way.

Comment #61On the stamp issue. My view is that it was on purpose. They’d been having a bit of a spat previously, and he was aware of the player sliding towards him and chose to jump over him. His method of jumping was to hop up in the air and come straight down on the other leg. It would have been just as easy to push off with the standing leg and clear Yedlin; this would be the motion if you were trying to run off and keep up with play. I also think he moves his leg in slightly in order to catch him. I don’t know If you’ve ever expected to tread on the ground and then stood on something, but when I do, I feel a sense of activation and automatically look down at the foot. If you accidently tread on someone, you don’t look away in the distance as if nothing unusual has happened. Shelvey was ‘clever’, in that he acknowledged his treading on Alli by tapping him on the shoulder, as if to say “sorry mate”.

he is a defender, his main job is to stop them going in his end of the pitch, scoring at the other end is a bonus. i hold Lascelles responsible for at least 2 of our goals against , and i think he panicked last week v Brighton, he ran backwards towards our goal.
someone like terry was head shoulders above Lascelles at both ends of the pitch at the same age.
why would any manager tell a player to tell the world about a scoring technique? wouldn’t he just work on other ones and have more options instead of restricting his options, maybe i wouldn’t waste time on your other thoughts, think about clowns ? lol.

Comment #69Back to Eds blog –
I’m truly amazed that a team South of Watford has had a 3 game ban imposed on them. I fully expected Hemed to get a ‘slap on the wrist’ for creating the ‘accident’. What on earth will the FA do when two Northern teams play each other on Sunday? Let’s see!
