Rafa Benitez – He’s A Great Player – Will Get His Chance

Jonjo Shelvey has yet to start for Newcastle since he was sent off in our first game against Tottenham last month.

Jonjo could start the game against Liverpool tomorrow and most fans would like to see him partner young Mikel Merino in central midfield if only to see how they can play together.

Mikel could play the holding midfield position and the 21-year-old has the class to also play as the attacking central midfielder.

Jonjo Shelvey – could start against Liverpool

In his press conference yesterday for the game tomorrow Rafa was asked if he would play Mikel and Jonjo together and whether Shelvey would start.

This is what the manager said:

“You always try to find the balance between your attack and your defense, and we will try to do that.”

“Obviously, we know that Jonjo is a great player, so if he is doing well in a game, it means that the team will be playing well.”

“He will have a chance, for sure, to impress. I don’t know if it will be from the beginning in this game or maybe another one.”

“I don’t want to give any clue to Jurgen – but he’s an important player for us.”

“We try always to win. I am not thinking about anything else other than trying to get three points.”

“After it depends on how the game goes – maybe one point is good enough – but at the beginning, just try to get three points.”

We have to hope that Liverpool are not at their best tomorrow and we are.

If that happens then we have a good chance to win the game.

And the Geordie fans are split on the result tomorrow.

If Hayden was in form I would keep him and Merino starting in the middle.mIn my opinion we are nicely balanced that way.
But Hayden has been a bit off…
Rafa should be able to see in practice basically how Merino and Shelvey will work together. Rafa has to trust his players. Jonjo is a big question mark for him.. So I think it’s Hayden if fit. Shelvey to come on later..

Shelvey and Merino playing together in the holding midfield pair, would help each others game as both have the ability to provide a killer pass and the opposition will find it harder to shut out two players. They will potential create space for each other to operate in instead of there only being one ‘playmaker’ and one ‘enforcer’, as they both do both roles adequately.

Personally i think Shelvey does nowt defensively. i reckon Merino would have to be a lot more conservative than he has been if playing alongside him, especially against good quality.

Harry Kane only his 13th goal this month, that’s a ridiculous stat lol. Not sure where he will be playing his football next season, but it will not be with Spurs. Not unless Kane is willing to play for less than the going rate, which in unlikely.

Ol’ Levy is going to have to give a lot of his players large pay increases, or all of his best players will be going the Kyle Walker route.

https://www.thisisanfield.com/2017/09/fab-four-start-rotation-come-liverpools-lineup-options-vs-newcastle/ < Some of the potential Liverpool lineups. The Liverpool fullbacks look weak to me. Ritchie will cause havoc.

Somebody mentioned the other day about Yedlin playing very narrow at times. I noticed this in the last game on a couple of occasions – he was right next to the centre halves leaving the wing totally exposed and the winger free for a pass.
I presume he was doing this under instruction – I would have thought keeping relatively close to the winger would be the best option – thus cancelling out an easy pass.
Interesting to see if this is continued tomorrow. Would prefer to see him out wider.

SITC, if the ‘Udders fans have a meltdown, those clackers will come in useful! We’re 9th, but equal with Burnley – are they just above us on alphabeticals – both of us have 6-5 GD and 9 points.

Should spell our name 1Newcastle with a silent 1, in order to get higher league placings. This way even Aardvark Athletic wouldn’t trouble us.

chancel – I noticed my error after posting.
Somebody mentioned the other day that the typo’s/errors in folks posts were often amusing and an upgrade on what was originally intended.
I just knew someone would “pick it up”. I did see the amusing side.

Please lets not start accusing folks of all manner of things – especially worrying are allegations often made on the blog.
for example in “normal society” we have lunatics/crazed monsters/sex fiends/paranoid schizophrenics stalking ordinary/normal members of the public.

On the blog -the reverse is alleged where ordinary/normal members of the public are stalking lunatics/crazed monsters/sex fiends/paranoid schizophrenics.

How on earth did the Palace owners think that Hodgson would provide inspiration after that calamity of a Euros, it was almost as though he went senile in the space of a few days. It is completely inexplicable what he tried to do last summer.

You are right Shelvey is not the best at putting in a tackle, but my point is with him and Merino you get the best balance of defense and attack. They can both cover the back four, are good midfield playmakers and will be of benefit to each other playing centrally. Tomorrow we are going to need the front four to be more controlled in possession in order to give the back line some respite and keep themselves organised. Their front four will press high and run rings if they are allowed.

To be honest mate, I’m just going to go along there tomorrow with the attitude of enjoying the football. I’m not too optimistic about the result so anything will be a bonus. There should be some good stuff played, hopefully including our play of course. 🙂
I just about lost my mind and a few blood vessels at the Stoke game, it seemed hugely important cos that’s a game we expect to win.
Tomorrow is a free hit in my view, so less nervous tension!
