Rob Elliot has played well this season for Newcastle in the league and on Sunday against Liverpool he made some crucial saves – one being when Ciaran Clark inexplicably completely miskicked the ball in the second half.
We have played well in defense this season only conceding 6 goals in our first 7 games, and we looked very solid on Sunday although Liverpool again missed a number of chances; that seems the norm these days for the Reds.
We were interested in some goalkeepers in the summer, and one of them was former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina, and he could be a free agent next summer when his contract runs out at Napoli.
And Rafa may try to buy him either next summer or even in January for a small fee so that Napoli receive something for the 35-year-old.
It doesn’t seem like we need a new goalkeeper with Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow holding down the fort and young Freddie Woodman coming through quickly.
The 20-year-old England U21 International could even be challenging for the first team position next season.
We were interested in PSG goalkeeper Alphonse Areola in the summer, and he appears he is now the number one at the Paris club edging out German Kevin Trapp.

But PSG at the last moment this summer tried to sign Pepe Reina from Napoli and also went after Jan Oblak of Atletico Madrid.
So whether the PSG hierarchy rate the young Frenchman is a good question.
France Football is reporting Newcastle are still interested in the 6ft 5ins French U21 International and are continuing to watch him this season.
He is also having an excellent season for PSG, but if he is unhappy at the club, then Newcastle could make a bid for him either in January or next summer.
That’s if Rafa Benitez still thinks we need a new goalkeeper brought into the club.
He certainly seemed to feel that way last summer.
What do you think?
