Rafa Benitez Hints At New Signing In January

First choice left-back Paul Dummett has been out since the first game of the season on 13th August when we were beaten 2-0 at home by Spurs.

The news earlier was that Paul would not return before November and now a clarification on that is that he will not return until after the next international break – which ends November 18th.

Paul played 46 times for Newcastle last season with 45 starts, and he was an automatic first choice for Newcastle at left-back, and it’s obvious Rafa rates the 26-year-old local lad.

Matt Targett – could provide competition for Paul Dummett at left back

Rafa has talked about the injury to Paul today on BBC Newcastle:

“We knew it could be long, and still we have to wait.”

“At least we have to wait maybe one month, and maybe more because it’s part of the process.”

“He will be back with us in time, we are already working hard to try and reduce the time, but it is clear that we have to respect that timeframe.”

“If we can bring someone to compete with him in January, it will be fine but at the moment I’m happy with the job the others are doing.”

Paul needs more competition at left-back when he’s fit.

We would hope that Newcastle would reconsider signing 22-year-old Southampton left-back Matt Targett maybe on loan in January, so Rafa has half a season to judge whether he’s good enough to join the club permanently next summer.

Matt has played for all the England youth sides and 12 times for the England U21 side.

But maybe Newcastle were forced into looking at a loan deal for Matt because of a lack of funds last summer.

And maybe there will be more money available in January to bring in a  permanent signing at left-back?

Hope so and if we have new owners by then – there will be.

What do you think?

I expect spending northwards of 80million in January with the new owners in place.

Also, if shelvey is being touted for England it shows how crap England are. No offence to shelvey but he’s a top 10 club Premier league player. Not top 6 clubs. Country like England should be having champions league players in their starting 11. Not the likes of shelvey.

During shearers era, shelvey and England won’t even be mentioned in the same sentence.

ilovetoon – trouble is that if you look at top 6 you’ll find that majority of the teams are staffed by foreign players and not eligible to play for england – now if they change the rules so that you have to play for the country in whichever league you are playing, england might have a chance of actually winning something

If England have Henderson as a first choice we’re scraping the bottom of the barrel, I can’t see what he gives a team other than running around

Shelvey has a unique talent. Even if he is was not good enough to start in a top 4 side, he can pass better than a lot of top 4 midfielders. That surely warrants a place on the bench in most sides at the very least. I personally do not think Shelvey is as slow or weak defensively as some make out. Shelvey’s acceleration isn’t explosive, but he is fast in full flight, and he certainly isn’t afraid to stick his foot in.

Was Pardew the manager from 2011 to 2013? He will be in deep doo-doo methinks.

Does anybody else remember when the amounts paid to agents were published? I remember Pardew was complaining about how ‘free signings weren’t free’ (Demba Ba?) and that agents were taking a good chunk out of the game and pocketing it. I also remember thinking that the amount we paid in agent fees were a bit exorbitant given the payers we signed.

I guess now we know why.

she has already tried to buy both liverpool and spurs, and i put us in the same category as both of those clubs in terms of support, the thing i think goes better for us is the fact we are a one club city.

if someone forward thinking like sir john hall gets the club, we could be a giant club. it’s been done once before, so why not again.

while i think keegan was great, he was also not good, great motivator both players and fans, but didn’t know how to close it out.

better support in the transfer market a long with good buys, and Rafa can deliver.

My guess with Murphy is, based on the recent Atsu news, he was bought in as the bad knee replacement. Originally we were under the impression he could be got for 8million, he’s young, english, quick and when Rafa saw him against us, he looked good. I suspect in past seasons, when Norwich wanted more, we would have just said no thanks, but Charnley was already on the Rafa naughty step for penny pinching and dithering, and so we were pushed up to 12million if all the add ons are activated. I do wonder if his lack of game time has some add on based incentive. To discover that he runs hot and cold, is lacking in the decision making/end product department, you would only have to read the Norwich blogs; surely this must be part of the scouting process now.
Obviously Rafa doesn’t trust him and would rather play a less than 100 percent Atsu. Same obviously applies to Aarons, who I read was available in the summer for the right money.

Great news on Lascelles contract. There have probably been clubs registering interest in the guy, so it is good the club has been proactive and got him tied down for the foreseeable future. If anybody wants him, they are going to have to make a ridiculous offer to get him now.

I think Murphy was bought as a compromise, Rafa wanted Townsend but the club want U25’s with sell on value, I believe that’s why Murphy was brought in.

I think along similar lines. He came to us on forest junior wages, I don’t imagine he was on a very good wage (by premier league football standards) before. Club, fans, blah, blah, blah; I just wish sometimes they’d be more honest, instead of flapping their PR lips. It would be so refreshing to hear one say, “So why did I sign the new contract? Well, they offered me shit loads of money to play football. What’s not to like?”

    chancel,
It would be great if he’d signed knowing a sale to an ambitious owner was imminent and that the future was very rosy indeed, but on 40K a week for the next six years he’s set anyway. He probably believes he’s good enough for Chelsea but why take a chance on a move elsewhere when someone offers you that kind of long term dough, he’ll get a multi million pound move eventually if he’s good enough.

I prefer him to Collocini one hundred percent, for me he summed up the whole Ashley era, a club of management and players with absolute no interest in the welfare of the club or the shirt, hopefully this lad becomes one of our legendary captains.

Exactly. Suits everyone. And 40k pw for a premier league player in 3 years time will probably be considered low.

Very different from Collocini in style and playing in a different team. Collocini played more like a sweeper in a team which wasn’t as defensively well organised. He would often try to snuff out attacks by anticipating and chasing the ball down. If it worked great, but if not, it left Willo trying to defend against numbers coming at him at pace, with no help. Not his forte. Willo was slow, with a bigger turning circle than the QE2, but was otherwise a pretty good defender. I bet he would have looked good in a Rafa team. Likewise, I think if Lascelles was playing for Liverpool, he would be being slated by their fans as useless. Villa fans thought Clark was useless.

Lascalles signing a new contract is a very shrewd move.
    He benefits.
The team has stability and sees what’s possible.
Rafa shows confidence in his leaders.
Keeps the leary opposition from sniffing around in January (or grossly inflates his transfer price)
    Ashley’s boosts the clubs value.
Amanda thinks “ they know what they’re doing this Newcastle, must get me a part of this action”
Cue: smiling picture of Amanda with Toon flags all around
