First choice left-back Paul Dummett has been out since the first game of the season on 13th August when we were beaten 2-0 at home by Spurs.
The news earlier was that Paul would not return before November and now a clarification on that is that he will not return until after the next international break – which ends November 18th.
Paul played 46 times for Newcastle last season with 45 starts, and he was an automatic first choice for Newcastle at left-back, and it’s obvious Rafa rates the 26-year-old local lad.
Matt Targett – could provide competition for Paul Dummett at left back
Rafa has talked about the injury to Paul today on BBC Newcastle:
“We knew it could be long, and still we have to wait.”
“At least we have to wait maybe one month, and maybe more because it’s part of the process.”
“He will be back with us in time, we are already working hard to try and reduce the time, but it is clear that we have to respect that timeframe.”
“If we can bring someone to compete with him in January, it will be fine but at the moment I’m happy with the job the others are doing.”
Paul needs more competition at left-back when he’s fit.
We would hope that Newcastle would reconsider signing 22-year-old Southampton left-back Matt Targett maybe on loan in January, so Rafa has half a season to judge whether he’s good enough to join the club permanently next summer.
Matt has played for all the England youth sides and 12 times for the England U21 side.
But maybe Newcastle were forced into looking at a loan deal for Matt because of a lack of funds last summer.
And maybe there will be more money available in January to bring in a permanent signing at left-back?
Hope so and if we have new owners by then – there will be.
What do you think?

Comment #47Jail…… Don’t know how it managed to get all those hearts but at least it’ goes some way to explaining some of his / her’s irrational behaviour. Imagine the poor sod having to deal with all those hormones whizzing around in different directions playing havoc with any chance of logical thought.

Comment #50Jail…. Funny named fella scored, great goal but Mitro looks sluggish and ponderous. I’m watching it live now here in Ivory Coast.Loads of great sports channels over here.

Comment #56Lascelles signing his new contract could mean that he’s devoted to NUFC and told his agent that he’s committed to seeing it out or, that NUFC can get a massive fee for him when the big hitters come sniffin’

Watching Yedlin and the US team vs Panama in Concacaf WCQualifier. So far in at the 22nd minute young Christian Pulisic, has scored a goal and created one. Playing in the CAM #10 role he is totally wreaking havoc on the Panamanians! Not to reopen the criticism of Ayoze Perez, but what a difference it would make having a creative, skilled and intelligent #10 like Pulisic playing for the Toon!
