Rafa Benitez has finally talked about all the takeover speculation that has gone on this week.
Newcastle fans are hoping that a rich, ambitious investor could buy the club from Mike Ashley and sooner rather than later.
The Times reports there are at least three potential buyers engaged in due diligence at Newcastle, with one of them being Amanda Staveley.
And Rafa is reported to have met Staveley following last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool, and she probably wanted to know if he would be willing to stay long-term at Newcastle.
Rafa Benitez – maybe we can afford better players?
You never know with Ashley, but if somebody comes along with close to a £400M offer for the club, he will sell.
Rafa doesn’t really think it will change much at Newcastle other than with more money available he can buy better players.
This is what he said about that as reported in the Chronicle today:
“It doesn’t change our approach in terms of what we have to do.”
“We just have to keep working and looking forward at players in different positions.”
“Maybe if you have more money you can go from this player to this player but what you’re looking for is the characteristics of the players.”
Of course, Rafa already has Newcastle looking like a reasonably stable Premier League team and what we need now is more money to buy top players, so we have more class and creativity in the side.
That could be the difference between Newcastle being in the top six or in the middle of the table.
And we know that having an owner who matches the ambition of Rafa Benitez is really vital if we are to have some success down the road.
