The Times reported recently there are as many as four consortiums currently interested in buying Newcastle United FC and three of them have been conducting due diligence looking at the financial records and having already signed a non-disclosure agreement.
There has been a lot of news surrounding 44-year-old Amanda Staveley since she attended St. James’ Park for the game against Liverpool.
She is the Senior Partner at PCP Capital Partners which is located in Park Lane, London and she is interested in potentially buying Newcastle.
But she is is the only one of the four bidders who has not done any due diligence on Newcastle’s books, according to a report in the Mirror today, which is a bit of a surprise if that is true.
Mike Ashley – current Newcastle owner
Staveley is reported to have opened talks with Liverpool FC which is probably one reason she was at St. James’ Park to watch Liverpool and informally meet with their officials after the game, but she’s still said to be interested in possible buying Newcastle.
She met with Rafa Benitez after the game, and we thought that was to see if he was willing to stay long-term at Newcastle if she was successful in buying the club.
But maybe it’s was (also) to ask if he would consider returning to Liverpool as manager if she was able to buy the Merseyside club.
Some things are working towards Newcastle being sold quickly and possibly by the end of the year:
- One is that Mike Ashley would like to sell quickly since he doesn’t want to invest any more money into the club in January.
- The buyers will want to complete the deal before the end of the year so that they can provide transfer funds to Rafa Benitez to significantly improve the squad as much as possible in January.
- The Premier League TV rights deal is currently being negotiated for the next three years starting in the summer of 2019.
It’s expected to top the £5.1B of the current deal, and there will be even additional funds such as those for the streaming rights for the games.
That could put the price of Newcastle up because of the increased future revenues of Newcastle – so any buyers will be keen to buy Newcastle before February.
The other three consortiums other than Amanda Staveley would seem to be ahead of PCP Capital Partners in the process of buying Newcastle.
And if we were to hazard a guess we’d say one of those three could buy Newcastle before Christmas, and they could be Chinese.
What we need is for any new owners to be everything Ashley was not.
Ambitious and willing to invest significant funds into the club, but let Rafa run Newcastle from the football side of things and recreate the club in his own image.
And even though Amanda Staveley is getting all the attention at the moment she may lose out – especially since she is trying to buy Liverpool for a third time – for a price said to be a massive £1B.
£380M is supposed to be the latest price on offer for Newcastle United, and that’s a lot less than £1B.
Some would even say it’s a much better deal given the enormous potential of Newcastle United under Rafa Benitez.
What do you think?

Comment #44Georgia as a massive 30/1 against Serbia. They couldn’t be that bad. They have drawn most of their games, which is suggestive that they can frustrate sides. Any team that can keep things even always have a chance to snatch a win.
I think Ireland will beat Wales, Martin O’Neill is a better manager than Coleman in my view.

Comment #49THE number of footballers being probed for alleged tax evasion has doubled to 90.
HMRC is also checking on 38 clubs and 13 agents.
Inspectors believe many players have set up companies in tax havens to receive millions from image rights rather than wages.
The two are treated as separate income streams since a 2000 court ruling.
Tax experts told a parliamentary hearing in January they were looking into 43 players.
Updating the figure the HMRC said: “We are making enquiries into 90 footballers, 38 football clubs and 13 agents for a range of issues including image rights abuse.”
The taxman has clawed back more than £260million in unpaid tax since targeting football.

Didn’t say anything about the significance. And your wrong, I do think it’s significant But treating everything the red tops say as Gospel is becoming tiremsome. What will be will be and we will cross it when we come to it. For now just enjoy the good times!

Comment #54I cannot see that HMRC (Her Majestys Revenue & Customs) are solely picking on NUFC and why the FA should penalize us for any tax avoidance in that eventually.
I would think every EPL club are equally as guilty, are all of them going to be demoted to League 2, it would be one hell of a tough task to get promoted from it if they do!!

Comment #60This HMRC stuff is important.
I was reading yesterday (cannot remember where) that the fiddle was coming to arrangements to falsely lower a players wages -then pay the the “difference” to the player by alternative means -to agents etc who who then funnel the money to the player. Clear tax fiddle if true.
If this is true – as a consequence the clubs accounts must also have been “doctored” to cater for this deception.
If you were a prospective buyer would you be able to make any judgements based on dodgy accounts or indeed make any purchase/investments if you knew this.
Probably only talking figures in the low millions – but surely this will not make folk rush to buy the club – they could potentially end up picking the tab up for this (if true)_. So currently very important!!!!

Comment #62Did anyone else click on that “report in the Mirror today” link that Ed posted in the article? Unfortunately it has nothing to do with the current story and instead takes you to a 2008 Evening Standard article about how Ashley failed to perform due diligence when he bought the club!
Never mind, I’m more interested in the story about the other three potential bidders that’s apparently been reported in The Times. If they’ve signed non-disclosure agreements then I assume that explains why we haven’t been told who they are, but I’d be interested to know who the source the Times story was. As far as NUFC is concerned, the only Times journo whose information I’d trust is George Caulkin, and looking through his twitter posts over the last week or two I don’t see any mention of any other potential bidders apart from Staveley and her PCP Group. Something doesn’t feel quite right to me.

As it’s hard to believe anything put out by Ashley and co it’s difficult to know what’s going on. We were told by someone in upper management that The Mirror were our preferred media partners yet some of the most scathing reports come from that paper, yesterday they ran a story of Churnley being accused by a tax inspector of having a history of dishonesty, I don’t get it either, are we really for sale, is this tax shite a ruse to put buyers off while Mikey pretends we’re up for sale to excuse non investment. Given his track record is that really far fetched. Why does he spend more money on media PR than top football people, Rafa breaking that mould by fault rather than design.
