We were linked with Lyon’s French holding midfielder Maxime Gonalons during the summer, but he finally signed a four-year contract to move to Roma in July.
And there’s news today that confirms Rafa Benitez’ interest in the 28-year-old 7 times capped French International.
His agent Frederic Guerra has told the Naples radio station, Kiss Kiss, that Benitez has been an admirer of the midfielder for some years.
When Rafa was at Napoli in 2014, he wanted to sign the French midfielder, but it seems it was the player himself who turned down a move to Newcastle this summer to play in Serie A.

This is what Guerra has told Radio Kiss Kiss.
“Benitez wanted him a lot, and wanted him this summer at Newcastle.”
“We have preferred the Italian championship because it is very tactical football, and Maxime works on his game day after day.”
Gonalons has made two appearances for the Serie A side so far, once in Serie A and once in the Champions League.
While at Lyon for eight seasons he played 333 times for the French club with 13 goals and 12 assists.
