Rafa Benitez Reported Ready To Sign This Defender In January Window

According to outlet O Jogo in Lisbon, Newcastle are interested in signing 28-year-old Argentinian center-back Lisandro Lopez in January.

We were linked with the 28-year-old Benfica defender in the summer when we were also after his Benfica teammate – Greek International central midfielder Andreas Samaris.

Lisandro has had trouble getting first team games at the Portuguese giants, and the news is that Rafa Benitez will try to buy him in during the January transfer window.

Newcastle are reported to be the club most interested in acquiring the 6ft 2ins tall Argentine defender who has played 4 times for his country.

28-year-old Benfica defender Lisandro Lopez

Lopez signed for Benfica on a five-year deal, with a €35M buy-out clause back in the summer of 2013, but his contract has since been extended, so it now runs until 2021.

Benfica wanted around £10M for the player in the summer so it will be interesting to see what Benfica will ask for him in January.

While center-back is not a weakness in the current Newcastle side, Rafa has said he wants to increase the competition for places in every single position of the Newcastle side.

Depending on who the owners of Newcastle are in January will also decide which players Rafa goes after.

That’s because we would expect a lot more money to be available if new owners come in by then, and Rafa will be able to bid for better players.

What do you think?
