It was excellent news that Mikel Merino singed permanently for us from Borussia Dortmund for a fee said to £6.5M plus the loan fee we paid – whatever that was.
The deal is for five years and keeps the talented 21-year-old with us until at least 2022, and Mikel seems delighted to have made the move permanent.
He looks like he is a top player in the making and certainly, he can become a star midfield player in England under the coaching of Rafa Benitez.
The 6ft 2ins tall Mikel has played 7 times for Newcastle and he’s represented the Spanish U21 side 10 times with 3 goals and he could become a top future International for Spain.
Mikel Merino – Newcastle Is Like A New Home For Me
After signing this morning this is what Mikel has said – as reported in the Chronicle:
“I feel really happy. It’s a good thing for me to be here for the next years.” “I feel the love of all my team-mates and the people who gave me this contract.”
“I am happy and want to focus on keeping going and training to improve.”
“When I signed here with the loan I was only thinking about helping the team and improving myself. “The other things, like extending the contract, were things that would come if I did good things.”
“I wasn’t worried about that, but the contract was extended and that was a good thing for me.”
“The way the team has been with me and the way the fans are with me – I like the people here in the city.”
“It is like a new home for me and I am happy to be here.” “I can learn a lot from him and I am happy he is here with us.”
“I have a lot of things to improve and develop, and he is a good mentor to help me.” “I have learned a lot of things tactically already.”
“He is giving me a lot of advice and I am happy to learn from that.”
“I do not know too much about the history (of Newcastle) – I will have to study that.” “But I know I am at a huge club and I am happy to be part of it.”
“Newcastle is a huge club in England.” “Not only because of the name, but everything else about the club too.”
“It is cooler than in Spain (really?), but for me it is a good place to live.” “It is quiet and the people treat everyone with respect.”
“I am happy here, the weather is not the best for a Spanish guy, but I feel comfortable.”
“I am struggling with normal English – never mind Geordie. I have to study and learn and hopefully in a few more months I will know more.”
“I am really happy to have signed this extension.”
Very good words from Mikel there – he was obviously born to play for Newcastle United and for Rafa too.
