Paul Merson Predicts Newcastle’s Surprising Result At Southampton

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson is very much like David Prutton last season – he very rarely picks Newcastle to win a game.

In fact, we’d be way down the league table if Paul’s predictions had actually come true this season – but few have.

And he’s on form again this week and says Newcastle will lose 2-0 at St. Mary’s on Sunday afternoon.

Paul Merson – doesn’t rate Newcastle even with Benitez in charge

This is what he has said on Sky Sports about our game on Sunday:

“Southampton are a funny team who don’t score enough goals.”

“I know people will be surprised that I’d say they will win this 2-0, but I just think sooner or later something has to happen.”

“And they need to start entertaining, otherwise Mauricio Pellegrino is going to be in trouble.”

“They sacked the last manager because he was not entertaining enough and the new manager is no different so far.”

“Newcastle had a good result against Liverpool but (there’s always a but) I also look at their last away game when they lost at Brighton.”

“Prediction Southampton 2 Newcastle 0.”

About half our fans think we can win this game at St. Mary’s, and it will be a good test for us.

Yes – it will be a surprise if we lose 2-0.

    Sing,
Whenever either Lawrenson or Merson make a prediction that we will lose, I sleep well.

And then we will get the inevitable bile from Crooks in his team of the week section, after the weekend “surprise”!

Hibbit, you bugger! Hope you’ve got your private jet ready to fly Ashley oot of Toon! 💡
If you get that ‘un wrong, we’ll all be asking Tsunki where you leave, so we can all deliver a ‘special parcel’. And it won’t be a well presented memento in a nice box!

Can see Murphy getting a start Rafa talked him up in the international break and with Atsu and Richie playing through the pain barrier recently it would make sense to give him some game time either that or Aarons

Great opportunity to get a win against Southampton they are not playing that well

Great to see Merino signed on for 5 years. There was no point dragging it out any longer, it must have been getting more painful by the week for Dortmund to witness his value shooting up.

Biggest good news ever to wake up to. Have been banging on about him recently. The guy is a machine, fearless, tireless and probably the best signing of the summer.Read somewhere no player intercepts or dispossessed more balls in midfeild than him so far this season in the PL.He is a hulk and God of war.Thank you Rafa.
Super excited and you are a genius!!

I believe you more than the red tops about our potential sale. I’m still skeptical after ten years of the slug. If he sells you’ll be the first on my list that I owe a pint.

I don’t think I need to comment on Merino. All I’ll say is, he’s my new Robert Lee.

Rob Lee and Garry Speed are still my fave midfield pairing at NUFC.

absolutely delighted about merino signing think he is one of the best signings we have ever had. as for merson and lawrensons predictions go i would be more worried if they had picked us to get a result. the betting odds are ludicrous ,to be able to back win and draw and double your money at a team who have only scored 1 in the last 10 at home is great . anything can happen in football red cards etc but to suddenly think they are going to start scoring a few is laughable. have had a good bet on so hope i wont be regretting saying this.

Why do we give publicity to these pundits ? They know less than we supporters do. A logical forecast would be that Southampton won’t score given their form and our defence. You would get good odds for a 2-0 Saint’s win and I suspect the pundit has had a bet, given his history!

I think one great advance in TV, would be to have a button (not the mute) that switches off the inane comments from the so called pundit.

It would be great to go back to the days when the only voice was there to tell you the names of the players without anything else.
