Rafa Benitez believes that the training altercation between captain Jamaal Lascelles and Mo Diame has brought the team more together.
And that’s because of the way the two of them reacted after the fight in which Jonjo Shelvey managed to break a finger as he intervened.
The two of them offered to take the team out to lunch, and they immediately apologized to each other and to their teammates.
When players train hard it’s normal there are times when there are flare-ups on the pitch – it’s how they are handled that’s the important thing.
Rafa Benitez in training
Benitez was surprised at what occurred because it all happened so quickly.
This is how he addressed it in some of his interviews yesterday afternoon for the game at Southampton tomorrow, as reported in the Shields Gazette:
“They did it. After they were talking, and they had the idea to give a lunch for everyone or something. “Normal things.”
“It’s something that could be negative, but in the end, it’s positive. They are all together.”
“It’s not just Jamaal, it’s all of them. “We like to train hard. In this case, it wasn’t expected.”
“There wasn’t a problem. We had the three parts of the training session, and in one second there was a fight. And after it was nothing.”
“We were dealing with that and after it was OK. The day after they were training and they were in the same team.”
“There wasn’t a crisis. “It was surprising because I was not expecting it.”
“Sometimes, when you see players, you keep an eye on them and move them to different teams or the same team.”
“In this case, it was unexpected.”
