The long boring two-week International break is finally over, and the Premier League gets underway again today.
Newcastle will be at Southampton tomorrow and St. Mary’s isn’t exactly a happy hunting ground for us, and we have lost the last three games there.
But it would be a good time to get a win and if we can do that it will take us to 13 points from the first 8 games and that would be quite good.
Chancel Mbemba – could start at left-back
As far as the team for Sunday we played well against Liverpool at home in the 1-1 draw, so we don’t think there will be a lot of changes on the side.
Here’s how we think Newcastle will line up against Southampton on Sunday:
Elliot
Andrade Lascelles (c) Clark Mbemba
Shelvey Merino
Ritchie Perez Atsu
Joselu
That’s only one change from the side that started at home to Liverpool with Chancel Mbemba returning at left-back in place of Javier Manquillo.
There is a possibility Rafa may rest some players who were involved for their countries during the International break and maybe it’s time to give Florian Lejeune another chance at center-back in place of Ciaran Clark?
What would your team be for Sunday?
Comments welcome.

Comment #1With the general lack of injuries Rafa will need to start rotating the squad, but I do not believe he will need to after the two week break. Apart from the International players like Clarke, Mbemba, Yedlin….have Merino or Atsu been playing?
Any way, in principle we should be able to field our strongest side and potentially reverse our long running south coast fortunes.

Comment #2I think that will be the team nailed on the head there by Ed. The point I’d like to make is though one simple tweak in our players even keeping Rafa’s strict 4-2-3-1 tactic. Now we payed a significant amount for an England under 21 international in the summer who had Geordie running through his blood and an excellent scoring record for a winger. Now here comes the point. Easily and when I say easily I mean our only three real creative standout performers are obviously Shelvey, Merino and Ritchie. So why not introduce Murphy to the right wing and use Matt Ritchie’s exceptional passing, work rate and eye for goal and an assist and play him number 10 just behind Joselu or Mitrovic in my opinion. That gives us Murphy and Atsu blitzing the wing for speed when we counter with Ritchie either picking out a key pass, assist or just having an attempt. We need more creativity in there to blend with this defensive style. Boro we’re great defensively last year and went down.
So basically I’d go Elliot, Yedlin , Lascelles , Clark , Manquillo with Merin and Shelvey in front of the back four with Murphy, Ritchie and Atsu turning defence into attack with sporadically executed speed and accuracy. It’s kept Burnley up for two years and there still going strong. We are Newcastle and we need to do a Burnley and then move onwards and upwards. Viva the takeover it’s our only hope!
