Alan Shearer Responds To Good Point at St. Mary’s

Newcastle should have won this game after being 1-0 ahead and then 2-1 ahead with just 15 minutes to go.

But a penalty by Gabbiadini on his return to the side after Lejeune needlessly brought down Long meant we had to share the points.

It was a disappointment in a game we have every opportunity of winning but some poor defending let us down and Rafa will not be pleased by that.

But Alan Shearer is glad of a point given our terrible recent record at Southampton.

Hayden scored after 20 minutes to put Newcastle ahead and then four minutes into the second half Gabbiadini scored before Ayoze Perez scored his first goal of the season to make it 2-1.

But then the dramatic equalizer 15 minutes from time and it was 2-2.

Bit lucky to see the match out with 11 players on the pitch, so a point is a fair result from the game.

To call Lejeune a blundering , clumsy , brainless oaf would be letting him off lightly. That was three points in the bag without that moment of madness. The ball had gone and there was no danger ffs.

Gayle injured? How!? Seriously unfit, we need to be offloading him asap, but he’s losing stock all the time he’s not playing and these injuries will just further depreciate his value. Should have sold in the summer and replaced.

Merino is pure quality. He wins so many tackles and is so comfortable on the ball.

There’s some right spiteful nasty barstewerds frequent thos site. Calling our players dog shite ffs.
Of course it’s disappointing to lose but we got a decent away point and gave a good account of ourselves, we hit the woodwork, cleared off the line and a lot more corners than them, we could quite easily been down to ten men as well. I would have took a point before the game and now we have a good chance of three points next Saturday.

Harsh on lejuene, first full match for us and only second start in new league, other than pen he’s been fine. Massive mistake though which is very frustrating.

Merino is quality but I really don’t see him and shelvey as a good partnership. Should be either merino or shelvey.

    Sparky from previous thread
I feel manquillo was a big fault for their first goal and he’s cost us a few goals already this season. Think he’s lacking defensively and wish for dummett and mbemba to come back soon.

Yes, a footballing man like Rafa might agree with that assesement, but that guy you hail thought he knew better and Gayle stayed put.

Hayden makes a good point, we are a young team and will keep learning and improving.

Thought Lejeune was pretty solid all game aside from the blunder. What worries me the most is our passing and retention stats – 19th worst in the league and that was before this game where we failed, what seemed like, 50% of our passes.

I know we play on the break mostly but when we do have a chance to build play it means we break down virtually every opportunity.

It’s good to watch the game with a few guys
who know their footy and support different clubs
I watched it with a red manc a bloo manc and a
gooner they all enjoyed it and thought we were
slightly unlucky and what is more important looked
    a proper team

Agreed, Alan, the usual spanking avoided and could’ve had all 3 points. A fair result.

Was furious with Lejeune, but hey he’s young, he’ll learn. Should’ve played Clark in such a hard game.

Yedlin was great, but lucky to stay on.

    Gayle… Hhhm. Ahead of Mitrovic????!

Shelvey? Look for the obvious pass first mate. Though did better than I’d expected.

MOM? I’ll give it to Hayden.

Thought Elliot looked poor on the 1st goal but he’s been good this season so not much there just an off moment.

Lejeune cost us the game but he is class so as long as he learns from it not much but to go forward.

On the whole we looked solid and typical low possession solid counterattacking side today.

Joselu needs to be sat and Mitro or Gayle given a run.

Shelvey solid as a rock, put in defensively and set us up well on the counter.

    Motm Yedlin or Shelvey

It pains me to say but Jail is right

Newcastle are two points behind Chelsea and just outplayed Southampton at home. Lejeune isnt poor, it was uncharacteristic. Gabbiadini’s goal was similar to Coutinho’s ..not much you can do about someone scoring outside the box and the ball moving away from them, just tip your hat

Letter of law states the ref got penalty decision wrong… long wasnt in control of the ball and it was actually out of play as tackle came in
