Florian Lejeune And Isaac Hayden Both Start At Southampton – Merino On Bench

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has just named his side to face Southampton at St. Mary’s this afternoon.

Rafa goes up against his assistant at Liverpool for the last two years and at Inter-Milan, Mauricio Pellegrino, who is now the Saints manager.

Here is the team that has just been put out on the Newcastle United Twitter Account.

So some shocks in the selection from Rafa – with new signing Mikel Merino on the bench and Isaac Hayden coming into the side to partner Jonjo Shelvey.

Hayden will be trying to show he’s still worth his starting place at Newcastle.

Mauricio Pellegrino – Southampton manager

About half of Newcastle fans think we can win this tough game this afternoon – let’s hope they are right about that.

I had an inkling Merino would be dropped today. Clark has made a few errors recently, so a little time out with only keep him focused, totally understandable, although I reckon Clark is probably our best CB when in form.

Caught napping there missed the bus.

Just what are the coaches saying to players as they both look intently at the clipboard when coming on as a sub.

Coach:- Right Fred, that bit at the end of the pitch with the three white solid thingys and a net is the goal, ok

    Fred:- Right boss gottit.

Coach:- Good what you have to do is stick the ball between the three solid white thingys and into the net.

But only the one with their Goalie in it, OK

Fred ( really concentrating):- Ok boss, just the one with their goalie Ok, gottit.

Coach:- Good lad off you go..

Why on earth is Merino on the bench? Not gonna lie this has low key annoyed me. He’s done nothing to warrant being dropped. Hopefully this doesn’t effect him.

    Merino signs new contract…..

Ashley now ‘ protecting him ‘ so a sale can go through in January !!!

Only joking boys, it’s a strange one unless he is carrying a knock.

Clark may be fatigued from midweek and I am looking forward to seeing Lejeune again.

Got a funny feeling this could be a good game for us.

    2-1 Toon

    I hope

Really doesn’t like mitro does he.

Slightly disappointed he’s not on the bench as I thought he’d be buoyed by the fact he helped his country reach the World Cup and would want to show what he could do.

Talk about coming back down to earth with a bump lol.

If he doesn’t like him he should of sold him tbh.

Dropped is probably the wrong term for Merino: rotated.

This has annoyed me a bit as well but I’m guessing it’s due to his u21 duties and Hayden has had a 2 week break and will be fresh and hopefully focused and ready. I imagine if we are struggling Merino will come in around 60 mins to give us some dynamism in the middle.

Good to see Lejeune in – Clark has done well but looked a bit shaky last couple of games and has also been away on duty.

I wonder if Rafa will ever try Merino at 10. For me, he’d be great there. Then have Hayden and Shelvey central. Merino plays there for Spain U21. He has skill, vision and finishing. Surely he could do the role we wanted Cairney for. And much better than Perez.

Merino didn’t have his best game for us against Liverpool so Rafa’s policy of having two players scrapping for the same position kicks in. Shows that nobody is immune from being rested if complacent or a bit off form.

This team selection is based on who played hard international games midweek and it’s good that we have a squad good enough to do that, especially with no Mitrovich, Mbemba nor Aarons in the squad even! Merino and Gayle should get on at some point! Optimistic!

Still a strong side and canny options on the bench. Tight game probably, first goal crucial for us to get. Looking forward to having another look at Gabbiadini. I quite fancied us going for him in the window..

he didnt because he was asked to play the defensive minded player out of him and Shelvey. I actually had him as our best player, he broke up so many attacks, nicked the ball a lot of times. IMO he is our most complete MF players

Merino and Clark both rotated cos they were on international duty (weren’t they)?

    Seems straightforward to me.

Shelvey better than Merino tbh but why on earth is Mitro not even on the bench? Merino will be rotated in and out Shelvey regular starter long as he keeps his nose clean. The reason is simple, because we need a back up for Shelvey. If both play and both get injuries we are scr*wed in the middle as there are no other creative options.

Resting players in October because of international duty?

Yet firmino, coutinho, Jesus who travelled further than any other PL player on international duty all started.

Start your best xi, we aren’t even in the cup anymore so plenty if time for rest. Disappointed and slightly annoyed at this selection but rafa knows best.

Merino & Clark both played tough internationals in the week but then so did Yedlin with a lot of travelling as well so it doesn’t quite make sense!

Both being dropped is not a surprise got me. Merino had a weak game last time out. And clark made plenty of errors. Dropping them is the right choice, as they know they need to be playing at a very high level of standards expected by rafa. It will only spur them on to up their game.

    Good decision by rafa.

Just seen that Alan Pardew fella on the tv again. Last time on sky, I was very impressed with his tactical nous and man management skills. Seems this time he has fantastic scouting/player assessing skills. Am I the only one who thinks we should sack Rafa and get this Pardew bloke in.

I would think the the team Southampton have picked they’ll be going for it from the off.

Were’re going to have to soak and frustrate them and then hit them on the break, which is normal Rafa tactics so no surprises there.

What we need is our lot to take their chances cos we will get them.

I can understand dropping Merino and playing with Hayden as in a couple of games Merino has lost his player ie Huddersfield’s goal – still disappointed that he has been dropped/rested though.

Hayden seems to be playing the Tiote, Colback role at the minute

And would have rather seen MBemba at full-back – don’t know if injured and looks like Mitro is on his way out of the TOON unless he is injured – cannot get on the bench.

still going for a score draw.

I don’t believe Benitez is resting anybody. Clark has made errors, and Hayden really has to play in an away game like this. It’s all tactical.

Hayden needs to step up and have a big game. We have a terrible record away to the Saints so need a big defensive effort to get anything out of this game.

Playing away, hence Hayden who fully understands the role. Agree Shelvey is first pick in there. More likely to see Merino and Shelvey start at home, and Merino and Hayden when Shelvey is rested. Would have Mitrovic on the bench ahead of Diame and Gayle everytime. Simply the better player, and not having him there means we are very reliant on Joselu, who hasn’t quite looked the goods yet.
