Who Was Newcastle’s Man Of The Match At Southampton?

It was an outstanding overall performance from a good-looking Newcastle United side this afternoon on the south coast, and the only real disappointment was that we couldn’t get all 3 points.

But it was still a decent point at Southampton, and we need to pick up as many points as we can.

Hopefully, in our next game at home to Crystal Palace next Saturday we can pick up all 3 points, but that will be a tough game too.

Rafa Benitez on the touchline this afternoon

Rafa was not happy with the two goals we conceded, but otherwise he seemed pleased with many things, and as usual, our players worked their socks off for the cause.

No criticism in that department from this well organized and hard working Rafa Benitez side.

Ritchie for me. Determination, pace, challenged aggressively for everything in the air, played some clever reverse passes, raided the flank, made some good crosses, made the interception and forward run that lead to the goal. Ritchie is the best RW at Newcastle I have seen in my lifetime. Ritchie already has a long contract, but he should be rewarded with a pay rise for his performances.

Shelvey. Seemed to be picking up the ball at the back then at the forefront of most of the attacks. Not fast but a good motor. same with ritchie

Surely MOM should go to Hayden or Perez. Both run their socks off, as much as those other two, and got us two brilliantly executed goals.

Ritchie gives so much and never stops.
I would also rather he took the corners again and leave Shelvey floating around the edge of the 18 yard box

    My mom Ritchie

Perez certainly put the effort in and started attacks, with a super goal but just doesnt quite link up as well as we need. Thought he would be better at this by now. Trust in Rafa I guess

I think the ‘expert’s can stop banging on about us being relegated now. Should hibbit and sparky55 be right in their assertation that Ashley will be gone by Christmas then I can see a very rosy end to the season indeed. That bit of news from sparky last night made me feel very hopeful.

Catchy voted Atsu? Is he thinking about another game? Ritchie for me. Lejeune up until the penalty thing was thereabouts he put in some very important tackles today. I’d still start him next game.

Is it just me or is anyone else fed up of getting commentary on our matches always complaining about the other side losing and needing to do better etc? Today we had that nugget whining on about Yedlin not getting a second yellow all game. Get over it man!

I’m of the opinion that having both merino and shelvey on at the same time isn’t so much a failure as not adding up to the sum of their parts. One or the other for me.

Merino and Shelvey could work together. Just put Merino where Perez is playing keeping Shelvey where he plays regularly. Perex comes off the bench later in the game as they tire

Money isn’t everything. For all the complaints about lack of funding, our most expensive signing, Murphy, has so far proved unable to establish a place in the starting 11 or impress from the bench. However, a striker with pace, power and finishing would have seen 2 more points heading back to Tyneside tonight. Pity, as it was a great display in many respects.

Unfortunately we don’t have a confidence striker on our books that isn’t a raving lunatic. It doesn’t inspire the team when the top man is ineffective, Joselu very nearly scored but that would have been his third goal that’s bounced of one of his body parts and Gayle looks lost, I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed such a difference in a player.

I agree, don’t really see merino and shelvey as a good partnership in midfield. Should be either merino or shelvey. Mentioned this earlier after the game.

Saying that, it might be a necessity at times since other than Hayden we have diame.

And there’s quite a few comments recently saying that merino should play as a #10 since that where he supposedly plays for Spain u21. He does play a little further forward than for us but doesn’t actually play #10. Him and ceballos play in tandem similar to how de bruyne and silva have played for Man city this season.

And pundits complaining that yedlin should have got a second yellow is frustrating me massively. Yes he was lucky to escape but how many Southampton players got away with late fouls without getting booking, how many little fouls were given southamptons way and when Perez was clean through in the first half, why was that brought back for a foul when Perez hardly touched him if there was even any contact.

    beer,
I think Rafa would have taken the cash but had obviously lost faith in Charnley having his strings pulled to bring in a replacement, it was stick with Gayle rather than risk just having Mitro and Joselu.

In hindsight, how good could it have been for us to offer Fulham a straight swap of cairney for gayle? Would solve our #10 problem. Although saying that, don’t think we would have replaced gayle so would have been left with Joselu and mitro until jan.

@Tsunki: it used to really get under my skin, but I always think back to the board they used to have in the dressing room when Hoots got us up. All of the negative press and articles would be pinned up so they could get fired up about it. I don’t think we have the overall squad personality to get away with that these days, but if we keep quietly doing well, we’ll see the tide turn eventually.

On topic: I can’t see how Shelvey has gotten so many votes. He didn’t have a bad game, but he was always running away from receiving passes, stood off when he shouldn’t have, shirked a few challenges (mainly aerial – perhaps because of his hand?)… just not a great game from him imo.

I didn’t see shelvey having a good game either. Wasn’t bad either mind. Would have given an average 6 if I was rating him. Felt when merino came on, shelvey was given more licence to go forward but for me had little impact in that role.

I’m personally happy with mitro. If he is given full backing and support like by the Serbia manager then I don’t think he’s much of a risk as people like to say.

Jails explanation is not quite right. My mate owns a company called Moda Living which is huge property development co who works with the one of the biggest property investment company’s in the UK called Caddicks. Mood and Ashley have been battling for buying land and property for the last two years and Ashley has been paying over the odds and winning most deals.

Ashley has till December 15th to stump up the cash for a massive project but has to complete before December 15th. Moda are the underbidder so are on notice it’s theirs if Ashley doesn’t stump up in time.

It’s not really common knowledge and no-one in the property game will be coming on this here blog but at the end of the day he’ll find the money by hook or by crook with a combination of selling some of NUFC and something else or borrowing from someone…Ashley doesn’t come second…he’ll find a way somehow but it does have to done by Dec 15

@Ronaldo: Yeah, he was just bang average. It was interesting when Merino came on because we saw the three midfielders taking turns to roam forward (started with Shelvey, then Merino, then Hayden would venture up). Interesting bit of tactical work, but I think consistency is probably more effective than surprise for any sustained period of time.

I also agree with Mitro. The lad needs confidence, and given Joselu’s lack of scoring form, maybe it’s worth giving him an extended run in the side. Worst case scenario is he gets sent off for a daft challenge again, and he’s off in January. Reckon he’ll be sold anyway, but if we can get a couple of goals out of him between now and then…

That was a good point earned, a daft mistake by Lejeune cost us all the other 2 but we couldn’t fault the rest of his game.

Perez was instrumental in both of our goals and he again put in a good shift, I reckon he tries to much which makes him less effective at times, I don’t see Rafa dropping him in the near future however.

Joselu, there were moments when I wondered if he was on the pitch, perhaps we should get Toney back.
