Newcastle Pick Up An Injury At Southampton

Dwight Gayle was brought on for Joselu after 68 minutes in yesterday’s 2-2 draw at St. Mary’s and Rafa was hoping to use his pace against what could have been a tiring Southampton defense.

But Dwight picked up a calf injury, and he couldn’t run properly although he was kept on the pitch by Rafa.

The good news is that Rafa doesn’t seem to think the injury to Dwight is a serious one and he only picked it up with 10 minutes to play in a game we really deserved to win yesterday.

Dwight Gayle on the bench yesterday in the first half

This is some of what Rafa said in the local papers after the game yesterday as reported in the Shields Gazette:

“Dwight, we cannot say too much, because when he came we were expecting to use his pace.”

“But he had a little problem with his calf. He was working very hard, but with a problem.”

“In the last 10 minutes we were playing with just 10 players. Even then, he was still running and he was chasing some balls and passing.”

“But we couldn’t use his pace in the last 10 minutes, and that was a pity because we were under pressure and he was maybe the solution for us.”

“But after the run he did, he was feeling a little bit stiff in his calf and he couldn’t run in the same way.”

We’ll have to wait and see how severe the injury is and if Dwight cannot play at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday, then it will be an excellent opportunity for Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Mitro has been in form for Serbia as they qualified for the finals of the World Cup in Russia next summer and he is keen to stake a claim for a place in Rafa’s side.

Thought Gayle would have wanted to play against palace , seems to have picked up a mental issue which will keep him out.
Looks a completely different player to last season

We have looked absolutely toothless the last few games when we brought Gayle on. I know Rafa has issues with Mitro, but I would much rather him coming on the last 10 minutes and getting our wide men playing off him. At least we could give the lads at the back a break, as both Mitro and Joselu can hold the ball up reasonably well

People bring very harsh on Joselu in my opinion.
Swap Mitro for him from the start yesterday and what would have been different? He had no service whatsoever. For our second goal Perez really should have squared the rebound to him for a tap in and would have been rightly battered if he hadn’t squeezed it in himself. Other than that his movement was intelligent.. One of those games where he didn’t get many passes. Mitro, in actual fact, would have more often than not been stood rooted to the spot waiting for the perfect ball to arrive at his feet.

sitc, totally agree about Mitro. He can be a Jeckyl & Hyde type player. He can work his nuts off in some games, but more often than not he’s just waiting for the Hollywood pass. I would much rather persevere with Joselu.

Mitro back on the bench at the weekend hopefully. He should be straining at the leash now and will get his chance I’m sure.
Who knows, this could be a master stroke of Rafa man management?
Some day the penny should eventually drop with Mitro, and he can start to make progress towards the good quality striker he should be becoming.

    I hope it’s a short road

As for palace if we score early it will wind out of them
But Zaha and townsend will be a handful

At a stadium we notoriously fail at, against a team we rarely do well against a point is a great result. Yes, we could have won the game but there will be games, this season, where we will be battered and still come out with something.
