The Sun is reporting that Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez is on the lookout for a new goalkeeper to be brought in during the January transfer window.
Rob Elliot is the man between the sticks at the moment with Karl Darlow the backup, and Karl had an excellent season as the number one last term when we were promoted from the Championship.
But for some reason, Rafa wants to bring in a new number one and tried to sign Pepe Reina and Willy Caballero during the summer but was not successful.
There was even news that a deal for Caballero was very close, but the Argentine decided to sign on at Chelsea and warm the bench there.
Geronimo Rulli – 6ft 3ins 25-year-old Argentinian
The Sun is reporting that Newcastle are tracking two top south American goalkeepers.
The primary target seems to be 6ft 3ins 25-year-old Argentinian Geronimo Rulli, who plays for Real Sociedad and is currently valued at £15M.
In the summer of 2016, Rulli was signed by Manchester City for £4M but was then loaned to Real Sociedad, and he made the move permanent in January of this year.
Since May of this year, Rulli has been called up to Argentina’s senior squad but has yet to secure his first cap.
The other goalkeeper being tracked is 31-year-old Uruguayan Fernando Muslera, who has been the Uruguayan International since 2009 for his country and has 92 caps.
The 6ft 3ins goalkeeper has been playing at Galatasaray since 2011.
Fernando Muslera (shown above) is rated at about £8M.
We’ll have to wait and see if either goalkeeper comes in during January or next summer.
Pepe Reina will become a free agent in the summer when his contract at Napoli runs out.
Maybe Rafa will try to get his former Liverpool goalkeeper to Newcastle at that time?
