The Express are reporting today that Newcastle could again go after Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend in the January transfer window.
Andros played on Saturday for Crystal Palace against Newcastle, and he showed enough to show why he was so popular at Newcastle in the short six months he was at the club.
He has the ability, and with Rafa Benitez guiding him for that six months last year he showed some of the best form of his career.
We’re not sure exactly why Rafa didn’t buy him back in the summer, but it looks like it was the cost.
The reports were his fee had risen significantly from the £13M we got from Palace for him in the summer of last year.
Rafa talked about Townsend before the game on Saturday and said he was straight with him and that the player didn’t want to stay with Newcastle in the second division.
Andros Townsend and Rafa Benitez – will Andros be back?
And it’s clear Rafa still likes Andros as a player and as a person.
If Newcastle have new owners by the end of this year the Express are reporting Rafa may revive the deal and while there seems no insight for the story, it’s certainly possible.
Rafa will know exactly what he’s getting, and Andros is an emotional player who raises his game for the Newcastle fans.
Roy Hodgson may also consider selling the England International to get some transfer funds to strengthen other areas of the of Palace side.
And the manager will want to do that in January to help save Palace from relegation.
So it’s a possibility and if Andros is signed we dare say he will still be welcomed back by the Geordie fans.
Andros took the booing very well on Saturday and had a wry smile on his face.
He probably knew the fans would welcome him back if he decided to come back to St. James’ Park.
That still has to be a decent possibility.
What do you think?
