Benitez Keen On Bargain Buy For French U21 Midfielder In January

Newcastle were reportedly keen on 21-year-old Saint Etienne midfielder Jonathan Bamba, who was born in France but is of Ivorian descent.

The 21-year-old has so far scored four goals with one assist in eight first-team games this season – so he’s been in good form.

There’s a report in Le 10 Sport that says Newcastle are keen to sign the player in the January transfer window and are hoping to get a good deal.

Signing him in January would be good business for the Magpies since his contract at Saint Etienne runs out next June, and he is currently refusing to sign a new deal.

Jonathan Bamba – Rafa keen on this player

That means he should be available for a low price in January, so the French club get something for him before he becomes a free agent next year.

He has been part of the Saint Etienne setup since was 11 years old when he joined them back in 2007, so the French club will be due some compensation for him when he leaves them.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez is said to be a big fan of the young winger who is supposed to be interested to see what caliber of clubs come in for him in January.

Bamba has so far played for all the French Youth sides and 6 times with 2 goals for the French U21 side.

For the last couple of years, the 21-year-old has been on loan to Paris FC, Sint-Truiden and Angers to get some first team games.

He has played 23 times for Saint Etienne with 5 goals and 2 assists.

What do you think?

Joselu has had a fair run of games now. He wouldn’t have been given the same patience at any other PL club, then again, there isn’t any other PL club that would spend £5 million on a striker and expect him to lead a Premier League attack. I don’t agree that Joselu is great at bringing others into play, or lack of service is starving him. Joselu’s movement is a problem, if his intention is to drag players wide or deep, it’s meaningless and there is nobody aside from Perez to expose any space. I don’t believe Joselu is attempting to drag defenders out, I just believe he has poor movement and becomes impatient and drops deep/wide. I will be very surprised if Joselu turns it around. He doesn’t have age/form/potential on his side imo.

Don’t have a problem with Joselu.
In the system we play, he can be isolated,as can anybody.
He’s our only option if you want to play that way.
Gayle can’t do it. Too small/lightweight.
Mitro can’t do it as the Blackpool Tower has more movement than him.

He is what it said on the tin for 5M.

Mitrovic scores more goals than Joselu and is better at setting other players up. His movement couldn’t be that bad. Shame Joselu’s movement includes dropping deep and going wide. Not even the Blackpool tower can score from the LW.

I would like to see Mitro get back in and be given a chance because for me I also, like Ancient cannot see what Joselu brings to the side, Mitro does have his faults but seeing that set pieces appear to be our greatest weapon then for me it has got to be Mitro all day long, even his biggest critic cannot deny that he does unsettle defenders and due to set pieces being possibly our greatest weapon then unsettling the defence could be a great asset, if he is unsettling them it could give others an opportunity to get a free header, Lascelles has shown the value of free headers already this season, with Mitro their could be more.

maybe rafa just likes having 11 players on the field. mitro had just got back from yet another ban and was so lucky not to get sent off v west ham.

He really does need to improve his discipline, but when he is on the pitch he can get you some additional points, can Joselu, from what I’ve seen I’d say no he can’t.

Yes getting sent off can cost you points so you have to decide whether it’s worth the risk, Sir Alex Ferguson had the same dilemma with Roy Keane but he decided to stick with him believing that the good outwayed the bad, personally I would take the risk but it’s Rafa’s choice and it does appear that he won’t take the risk and it’s his decision that matters, but heyho, we can still have our own views.

How many chances did Sir Alex Ferguson give Roy Keane, at times with certain players you just have to accept that they are volatile and from time to time they will let you down, but for me he offers far more than Joselu and is Gayle fit, I would play him.

Actually it was Shelvey who cost us the points against Spurs, not that it matters as I do accept your point and I do agree with it, but my view is that he may cost us some points but I also believe especially as set pieces seem to be our greatest weapon that he would gain more points than what Joselu would, granted Joselu may not directly lose us the points due to getting sent off, but indirectly he possibly is costing us points due to his ineffectiveness.

It’s hard to say if mitrovic will offer more than joselu. He has barely featured for us. For a start we should start mitro for like 3 games in a row, and then we can compare joselu and mitrovic.

For now. There can be no comparison. But I’m not convinced of joselu to be leading our attack as in general he has been very poor.

Mitrovic was scoring in preseason and has 2 goals already this season, for all he has played. He has something like 8 goals in 11 at international level, and isn’t showing signs of being a liability. I would even argue what his red card at West Ham was unwarranted, even if you argue it was a red, it’s fairly clear there was no malicious intent. You have to go back to the 15/16 (3 seasons ago) season to point at Mitrovic’s actions making him a liability.

The whole conversation has been about Joselu but if it was me I’d play Mitrovic, didn’t mention him as Rafa doesn’t seem keen.

I don’t think he’s a liability and he’s decent with assists as well as getting goals, you can’t say we can’t play him as his attitude is no different than Shelvey who nearly always plays.

Maybe Rafa thinks it’s one or the other.

The West ham red card was a joke, no malicious intent at all and more if a witch hunt than anything else plus he really does have time on his side.

For me Mitrovic has done nothing that Shearer didn’t do several times a game just shearer was clever about it.

Maybe big Al could teach Mitrovic how to be a bit more canny, come on Alan MOTD can’t take up all your time.

    Ancient,
You only have to go back as far as the Wolves away game last season where he done his up most best to get sent off and had to be hooked at half time despite scoring the only goal and winner.

We’ve had Rafa here long enough to know that there are players he likes and players he likes less.
Mitro will not get a starting place in the side unless Joselu is either injured or suspended.
If he gets that chance he’ll have to make the most of it or he could well be out of here in January.

Jail, I do not recall the incident at the Wolves game, unless that was the game that Mitrovic charged down the keeper, in which case, I didn’t think it was a sending off, but could have been given.

Whether it was a red or not he was lucky to get away with it, normally you wind your neck in after a lucky escape like that but, like I’ve said he seemed hell bent on getting sent off. Shearer got sent off in long career, Mitro has been sent off three times in three seasons

“Whether it was a red or not he was lucky to get away with it.” It wasn’t a red card (Wolves Game) and a lot of pundits agreed it was no red. Mitrovic not only had every right to be chasing that ball, it was his job as an attacker. Scored the winner in that game. Judgement = not a liability in that game last season, but possibly lucky.

The West Ham retrospective ban was harsh, would anybody say Mitrovic went in with malice and was being a liability in that game. After being in the only player that looked like he could and-did score in preseason, then notching two goals in the few games he has played this season, does that make him a liability this season? Not in my view.

That takes it back to 3 seasons ago since Mitrovic was being truly reckless.

“Liabilities” are also those that do not contribute to the team as a whole. Jail, perhaps it is time you put your microscope over some of the other players that are a “liability.” You seemed to defend Jesus Gamez to ‘Our Toon,’ and what has Gamez contributed apart from 1 good game since he arrived. Is Gamez not a liability? Vacuuming up likely high wages and isn’t adding much for them. How about Diame, liability? Perez, liability? Joselu, liability?

Gayle has been the biggest liability of all the attackers this season. Maybe if Gayle had half the passion of Mitrovic, he would be mentally strong enough to play a game, and shock/horror, maybe get involved in a few debatable challenges.

I’m not people mean a chance a such, more a prolonged run of games.

Can’t remember last time he had half a dozen games in a row, always seems to be 1 or 2 here and there.
