If you want to see how down to earth and matter of fact Mikel Merino is, then take a look at his nufcTV interview after scoring the winning goal on Saturday at home to Crystal Palace.
As my mother would say – he’s just a lovely lad!
We signed Mikel Merino from Borussia Dortmund initially on loan for the season in the summer transfer window and then signed him permanently a couple of weeks ago for £6M – well maybe it was £7M.
In fact, the Guardian are reporting the total fee for Mikel was £8.5M – so take your choice.
It was a bargain buy!
Newcastle fans have already taken the 21-year-old to their hearts, and he’s extremely popular at the club.
And while he’s exceptionally ambitious he’s also a very modest young man.
Mikel Merino – loves the fans and everything Newcastle
Mikel has said how warm the Geordie fans have been as they stop him in the street and thank him for his excellent performances so far this season for Newcastle.
And he says there’s a lot more to do in Newcastle then there was at his last club in Dortmund.
This is what Mikel has said in the Guardian about Newcastle:
“I’m really happy with the people in Newcastle, they’re very kind, always trying to help you,”
“I didn’t expect that. I thought English people would be cold, dry and not kind but I was wrong and I’m happy about it.”
“I didn’t expect all the laughter and jokes you have here.”
“There’s much more to do in Newcastle than in Dortmund. I feel at home here.”
He’s one of Rafa;s best signings this year but there are other young players Rafa is having his scouting team watch.
And there could be other young players arrive in both the January and summer transfer windows.
What do you think?
