Mo Diame Starts For Newcastle At Burnley – Merino Injured – Not In Squad

Manager Rafa Benitez has just announced his Newcastle team for the game at Burnley tonight which will be televised live around the world.

Here is the Newcastle side as just announced on the Newcastle United Twitter account.

Sean Dyche – Burnley manager

There’s just one change to the side that beat Crystal Palace last time out.

Mo Diame comes in for Isaac Hayden to partner Jonjo Shelvey in central midfield, and that’s a bit of a surprise with Isaac Hayden on the bench.

But there’ no Mikel Merino and Henri Saivet is on the bench – Mikel has a back injury, so that’s a blow for Newcastle.

Newcastle fans seem fairly confident we can get a good result in this game tonight with over 50% thinking we can win the game.

A win would be a terrific result and would put us up to 6th in the league table.

No Mitrovic? I really thought he can receive a chance. Joselu cannot score :/ Anyway, fingers crossed for good game. Howay the lads! 🙂

Merino absent is a worry, let’s hope no serious injury.

Can’t say I’m particularly confident with that line-up. Diame and Shelvey don’t have the work ethic or defensive abilities of Merino and Hayden.

Mitrovic is surely done at NUFC.

    Let’s see.

Surprised at Mitro not even making bench, he’ll be gone in Jan for sure. Merino injured although Diame doesn’t fill me with confidence – I’ll be pleasantly surprised with a win but expect a tough 0-0 draw or a defeat

Would like to have seen Barlasar over Saviet on the bench whats the point in putting players in who you actively triedvto get rid of in the summer, lets give some hungry youngsters a chance, even if it is the bench, gives them the match day experience

I wish Rafas favourites were people who actually contributed

Gayle on the bench, no Mitro again, doesnt matter what he does now he wont make Rafas team unless Joselu and Gayle are both out.

Anyway lets see how it goes, starting 11 looks much weaker with no merino or Mitro.

Hope I’m proved wrong, can only see Diame lasting 60 minutes before he gases out centre midfield is miserable no spark or creativity there, need Joselu and Perez to be on top form HWTL

Disappointed that mitro isn’t even on the bench.

Seems a tad unfair too. Gayle comes back and he gets dropped completely.

Let’s face it, he’s better than Joselu, so far anyway.

Lost all faith in Joselu tbh (please prove me wrong)

As predicted earlier Joselu is starting and Gayle on the bench and no sign of Mitro – surely a better option than Saivet?

This has got to be Joselu last chance to start up front I would rather have mbemba up top, let’s hope he hits the ground running I liked being proven wrong so gonna stick a fiver on Joselu hatrick any one got the odds

Mitro suffers as there are two of ‘his type’ strikers and only one of Gayle. Rafa seems to prefer something different on the bench.

Odd that diame is starting over Hayden. Wonder if Rafa also has a mind in Bournemouths potential to run us ragged.

Saivet on bench too. Wonder how he’d play at no 10. That’s where he learnt his trade before being converted to a Dm.

Worried we may not have enough gas in the tank with diame playing deep. His legs look gone to me.

Seen signs of Diame with the bit between his teeth last time out…looks like he has finally woken up…Lacelles kicked him up the arsenal in more ways than one and it seems to have had the desired effect.

Even if they were both out and he got a few starts, maybe a goal or two, it wouldn’t matter because as soon as either was back fit he’d still be dropped.

    Obviously doesn’t trust him.

Surprised to see Hayden on the bench for diame. Shame merino is out, hopefully it’s just one game. Not surprised to see mitro out of the squad now that gayle is back, very disappointing but not surprising. Very difficult game today.

That wudnt fill me with any confidence. I thought diame was a top buy but have been proved incorrect. Strange decision to drop Hayden for him. Gutted for mitro. Maybe rafa isn’t getting the best out of him the way the Serbian boss is, but different teams I guess. Just wish he could get a chance to play. But even if mitro scored, I’m not sure rafa wud play him again. Still, that’s his prerogative. Htl, hoping for 1-1.

Not sure about the line up could easily be bullied out of the game by their muscular team
Looks like Mitro is finished with the Toon – pity might need him and if we get know one in in January could be knackered as we do not have a goalscorer

Just throwing this out there, so tell me what you think.

Mitro and mbemba often are dropped and quite often there are rumours of Benitez wanting them sold despite their performances. Do you think this could be because they are graham Carr signing?

The football from us has been perfectly acceptable thus season. Some decent passing and some good technical ability on view. But I think diame takes too much out of the ball and we might struggle to hurt them on the counter. We need Atsu on his game tonight, badly.
