Who Was Newcastle’s Best Player At Burnley?

It was a close game tonight at Turf Moor, but this time we couldn’t get a goal to cheer up the Newcastle fans.

Burnley scored the only goal of the game through Hendrick after 74 minutes, and although Rafa put on his three substitutes after that, we couldn’t get the equalizer to at least pick up an away point.

It’s just one game, and hopefully, we can play a lot better on Saturday against second-bottom Bournemouth.

This was not a good game for the Magpies.

It was a poor game. Both teams cancelled each other out.

Everyone just overreacts on here it’s embarrassing. We are punching above our weight as it is, you expect us to beat Burnley? Something only a few teams have managed thus far. Even Chelsea lost to them. Im not losing sleep over it. Rafa is doing the best he can with the squad he currently has, you guys think you could do better? Please say you could! I need a good laugh right now after reading this shit.

Burnley played against 9 men when they beat Chelsea, they had a 2 man advantage and almost blew it.

Burnley have done well this season, in fact they’ve done incredibly well considering the squad they have. I’d have our squad over there’s any day of the week.

It was always going to be right this season but I would prefer we try to beat the teams that will be around us rather than set up to pinch a goal and hope we keep a clean sheet. Especially considering they were missing Wood today.

We’ve only really had spurs at home as a real tough game, Liverpool have been shocking away from home so a point was still good for us. The pattern of the last few games hasn’t been good though time to mix up the forward line

Still. They beat Chelsea. And are currently 7th in the table. I would also rather have our squad (and manager). But what’s your point? On paper our team is better so we should win? Are you forgetting we were away?

It was a awful football match, I’m surprised to see Shelvey getting the votes as I though he wasn’t particularly effective. I couldn’t understand our persistence to not use any of our free kicks to any advantage. we looked like a team with a man sent off playing for a draw.
I felt it was a game made for someone like mitro a physical player with a bit of fire to be the ignition spark so I was dissapointed to see him not even on the bench.

Also although Lejune was mostly solid he’s a bit clumsy and made another mistake leading to a goal, for me Ciaran Clark should come back in. Diame was also ineffective and poor, I think the lack of appearance of merino also dissapointed me.
For me there was no standout good performer for us but many average performances. The only thing that set any of our boys apart was the mistakes and poorer performers.

We were very very comfortable until we got anywhere near the final third does that not sound alarm bells to you young mag?
And that is the same for 3,4,5 games
Especially against our fellow premotees so are you gonna be saying the same with the same results in the next 3,4,5 games?

Picking excuses for the games we won? Where did I do that? Read the comment again, we drew against Liverpool and lost to spurs they weren’t games we won!!

The point I was making is losing to those that we will be scraping with for points is very costly and the reason we went down twice. I’d prefer to beat those we’d be a fighting with than those who if we lost to wouldn’t be a 6 point swing.

Yes I think Burnley were there for the taking today as they were missing Wood, it was a game that we could have won if we had a go, get a lead and then by all means defend but don’t set up as if we are playing man city or another power house of a team!!

That was Burnley 2nd home win of the season, it’s hardly been a fortress for them. They are better away from home than at home

Young mag you’re wasting your time there are only the tools in the box available and one lousy mistake by our back line (particularly Yedlin who fell asleep ) was the separator of two teams who play in similar styles. Absolutely nothing to get upset about, it’s an away game so three points hardly costly. If Rafa does read this blog he must shake his head at some of the amateur FM’s on here.

tsunki, Personally at first I thought it yedlins fault but it was actually lejune, he came way out of position and everyone had to shift over to cover him. Leaving the gap behind yelling to be exploited.

I dont know what you expect from Rafa. He has Gayle – completely ineffective in the first two games- Mitrovic (who he clearly doesn’t trust anymore – I dont blame him either) and Joselu, who atleast has two goals (granted with more playing time). The forwards Rafa has are not good enough, but he has us sat in the top half. So I’m not going to sit here and complain. He clearly knows how to make this team work, regardless of how beautiful the football is. The main gripe I have with him is his insistence on playing Perez in the number 10. But still, look at his options!!! Perez or diame? Hmmm. He has an insanely difficult job getting this team to win against anyone in this league, it’s simply not good enough. But he knew that and recruited very smartly. Buying workhorses who are prepared to run themselves into the ground for results for us. I applaud his and the teams effort for this game, and wish them luck for the next match. Because that’s all we should do!

Think there were 3 mistakes, yedlin initially gave it away, then Diame wasn’t strong enough I think. Then Perez lost ball which caught us out, the defence didn’t push up and they scored.

The biggest frustration is joselu starts again and Diame along with Perez. Don’t think anyone had a good game except maybe Elliott. It’s not been working upfront for a while now, make changes and get it to work rather than hope it changes.

    Merino massive miss

Tsunki so joselu and perez are the only tools in the box then good to know there was me thinking we had a fit mitrovic that would at the very least shock the opposition that we had changed such tools

We looked like a limited team tonight but I think it’s fair to criticise some of rafa’s selection. Ní doubt jail will soil himself at that thought but realistic analysis is needed, not some sort of fatwa. Wtf mitro has to do to get on the pitch for even 20 mins is beyond me. Yes we trust rafa, but yes football is all about fan opinion too. Investment can’t come fast enough. Wudnt rafa love a big mobile target man with a good touch. Joselu is starting to look like a poor choice and I still can’t see why Murphy is worth 12 mill but hopefully in time etc

Why are people so shocked Mitrovic wasn’t in the squad? He’s a head case, that cannot be trusted. It’s as simple as that. Regardless of how unlucky some people suggested he was for being banned, he put himself in a situation where he could be banned. So it’s down to him anyway.

He’s too unpredictable to rely on, Joselu has been a disappointment but I get the impression Rafa has no other option due to Mitro being hot headed and Gayle being equally ineffective.

I’d hoped we’d play with Hayden in the abscence of merino swap out the lightweights of Perez and Joselu ( yep he’s big but he was lightweight this evening decked multiple times ) and push up diame and mitro give thier big lads in defence something to think about.

You miss my point completely, these games are massive and bigger than playing any of the big boys as these are the sides we will be fighting with come the end of season.

Joselu has 2 goals, the Liverpool one wasn’t even a shot a target from him. I agree on Gayle begs the question why he keeps making the bench as he’s been ineffective in every game he’s played in. Mitro was bought last weekend and caused enough trouble to win the corner that ultimately led to the goal.

Rafa will have to trust Mitro at some point, if he was trustworthy at the weekend then he should have been on the bench tonight in place of Saivet. As for Perez playing as no10, if you don’t have a no10 change the formation and accommodate for what you have rather than playing rubbish out of position to fit a certain style

What did you make of Diame starting?

Then maybe you could see where people are coming from
Before there goal we couldnt keep hold of the ball it was calling out for a change they then score we then bring on a defensive player and then swap our most consistant threat all season for murphy who hasnt had any sort of chance and then finally go with 2 up all after we had conceded even tho we were so so comfortable for most of the game apart from joselu and perez up top!!
Most of the game ffs! Apart from them 2!!

The one thing that shouts out to me when it comes to this game is the lack of quality and options that Rafa has available to him. Im sure he would change things if he had the options for it.

The obvious changes regarding our attacking force is tough. You have Aarons and Murphy who are both largely untested at this level and young. Then you have the number ten spot being up for grabs but who do you put in there? I hear shouts for Ritchie and Merino but again they are untested there. So what does Rafa do to please you? Take a risk? When things are going a lot better for us then planned? We aren’t that desperate yet.

There was plenty of times where we could of launched a free kick into thier area and pushed up our best aerial players against theirs, yes their defenders were winning the headers from crosses, but surely shelveys 10 yard free kicks to a defender achieved nothing more than keeping possession ( mostly. ) that was disappointing to me!

Diame was a strange one, I’m guessing he wanted to give him a chance, maybe he was performing well in training. Either way it was him or Hayden, I doubt the difference would have changed the game for us.

These games are higher stakes for us I agree, but when have we ever played good against a team that sits all there players behind the ball?

Yes, I saw the second half and bits from the first half because my Internet was messing up.

We discuss can Mitro be trusted. Why is the same not said of Shelvey? Over the last 2 seasons Shelvey has missed 8 or 9 games through suspension. 5 or 6 games than for apparent racial abuse and 3 games for a stamp which cost us at home to spurs.

Mitro has missed 6 games through bans in the same time, yes he’s hot headed but why is he not like that for Serbia and why wasn’t he a liability for anderlecht? Shelvey can be trusted but Mitro who’s missed less matches can’t be. Anyone have answers?

Behind the scenes I’m guessing. Rafa clearly has trust issues with Mitrovic.

Last game of the season vs Spurs, first appearance this season after being subbed on vs West ham.

Atleast Shelvey has been attending therapy, he clearly is working on it. Can we say the same for Mitro?

I can defo see Everton improving, Leicester already look better know they have a manager. I hope palace are gone and never come back.

I always want to see us do well but we’ve used the same tactic against 3 teams we will be fighting with come end of the season and lost all 3 by 1 goal to nil. Yes we are in top half and things are still looking good, in reality we are only 6 points off a relegation place though.

A win at the weekend against a struggling Bournemouth will make me very happy and the international break will give merino time to recover.
