There is news coming out of Turkey today on Aksam.com that Newcastle have put in a €20M (£17.5M) bid for what looks like our number one transfer target in January – 26-year-old Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun.
But the bid was said to be turned down by Besiktas’ President Fikrit Orman who wants a fee of £20M for the player.
We certainly need a player who can start to score goals for Newcastle after we have managed only 10 goals in our first 10 games in the Premier League.
Last year we were well served by both Dwight Gayle (23 goals) and Matt Ritchie (16 goals) who between them scored 39 goals for us last season.
This season neither has scored a goal yet, and Dwight is struggling to get into the starting lineup.
Newcastle want to sign Cenk in January and with the club only presumably £2.5M short of Besiktas’ valuation, a deal could be agreed between the clubs.
Crystal Palace and Tottenham are two Premier League clubs also interested in Cenk, and the Turkish club believe it will be difficult to keep their striker in January.
They are reported to be already looking at potential replacements.
Cenk Tosun – top target for January
Last season Tosun scored 24 goals and 4 assists in 47 games for his club and this season he has scored 6 goals and 2 assists in 10 games.
Since joining Besiktas from Gaziantepspor back in 2010, he has played 128 games with 56 goals and 12 assists for the Turkish club.
With the poor performance of our strikers so far this season, it seems critical that Rafa beings in at least one new striker in the January window.
That’s if Newcastle are to finish in the top half of the table this season.
