Rafa Benitez To Give Mitrovic And Gayle A Chance Up Front

Rafa Benitez could well give an opportunity to one of our backup strikers Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic for the important home game against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.

Neither player has played too much this season with Ayoze Perez playing in the withdrawn striker role and Joselu playing as the lone striker up front.

But we haven’t looked too likely to score in a number of our games and in four of our 10 league games we have failed to score.

We’ve scored 10 goals so far but the good thing is we don’t concede too many, so in January Rafa will be trying to bring in a new striker – maybe even a couple of strikers.

Dwight Gayle – to be given a chance by Rafa?

Rafa has been interviewed by Sky Sports and this is what he said when asked if Mitro was still in favor at the club:

“Yeah. You know the competition for the strikers has to be until the end.”

“We now have Gayle, Joselu, Ayoze, an offensive player, and Mitrovic is fine. He played some minutes in the last game and is another option.”

“We know our strengths and weaknesses. We have to improve on everything.”

“But I am still happy with the work-rate of the players and the way they are approaching every game.”

“Sometimes it is that little bit of luck that makes the difference.”

“At Burnley, it was a game we were controlling and one that if you score one goal you could win.”

“In this case we lost.”

It looks like Mitrovic may not have a career at Newcastle and we’d be surprised if the former Anderlecht striker is at Newcastle come next season.

It seems like Rafa doesn’t trust the player – but at the very least he needs a chance this season to show what he can do for Newcastle.

He’s been in good goalscoring form for Serbia and helped them to qualify for the World Cup finals next summer in Russia.

It’s almost the same with Dwight Gayle who is likely to be sold for a good transfer fee to a Championship club either in January or next summer.

If things go well and the club is sold by Ashley before next season we would expect at least half of the team lining up for the first game next August will be new players.

What do you think?

Completely off topic, but a friend of mine reckons Lee Clark is being interviewed about the Mackems job! The way he burned his bridges with the SMB T-Shirt I can’t see that happening. Would love to see their faces if it were true though.
