Bad News – Report That Mikel Merino Could Be Out For Eight Weeks

There’s news coming from Spain today that Merino could be missing for Newcastle for between
six and eight weeks due to his back injury.

The news is in Diario AS, and if that is true Mikel could miss most of the 11 games coming up through January 1st, and that would be bad news for Newcastle.

Mikel is a star of the Spanish U21 side, so there is interest in Spain in Newcastle’s midfield player who has been a big success since signing on from Borussia Dortmund.

Mikel has been out for two games so far, and we have lost both games 1-0 so if this news is accurate it looks almost like a worst case scenario with his back injury.

Mikel Merino – could be out up to eight weeks

We would be very surprised if he is out even for up to six weeks.

Manager Rafa Benitez mentioned last week that his treatment has started and we would have to wait until we saw how he responded to that treatment.

But it looks like he could be missing for quite a few weeks now if the report is true.

On the other hand, we should just wait until we hear from the Newcastle medics and we still don’t know how serious the ankle injury is to captain Jamaal Lascelles.

We have some tough games coming up by the new year – 11 league games through January 1st – which is the number we have already played.

So by January 1st let’s hope we can double our points total to at least 28 points by then after 22 games played.

Hopefully, Mikel can help us do that.
