Rafa Identifies New Transfer Target For January

Rafa Benitez still seems determined to bring in another goalkeeper to Newcastle, and he could even do that in January.

The latest news from Spain and outlet El Gol Digital is that Benitez has identified Barcelona’s Jasper Cillessen as a potential target.

Cillessen was the number one Dutch goalkeeper when he made the move from Ajax to Barcelona in the summer of 2016, but that has been a disastrous move for him.

He was brought in by Barcelona to replace Claudio Bravo who moved to Manchester City and the Chilean International also finds himself on the bench at City.

Jasper Cillessen – Barcelona’s backup goalkeeper

Cillessen has played only 11 times for the Barcelona first team with German goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Ter Stegen)  the Barcelona number one.

And it looks like it will stay that way with the German goalkeeper having signed a new deal that keeps him in Spain through 2022.

28-year-old Cillessen has 37 Dutch caps and is keen to get first-team football again and would likely jump at the chance to move to Newcastle.

He’s always looked a good goalkeeper who is reliable and confident; he doesn’t make many mistakes and was Holland’s goalkeeper in the last World Cup in Brazil.

With 35-year-old Pepe Reina a free agent next summer we still wonder whether Rafa will make another attempt to bring in his former goalkeeper at Liverpool and Napoli?

But it seems certain that Rafa still wants to bring in another goalkeeper to Newcastle.

And if he does that in January then young and talented Freddie Woodman can then go out on loan to get first team games – which he desperately needs to continue his development.

Jasper Cillessen stands 6ft 2ins tall and played 143 times for Ajax before joining Barcelona last year.

I’m never sure whether stories like this are based on any inside information or if they find a potential goalkeeper with Spanish connections and make up the story around it?

Cillensen would be a first class signing by Benitez and the fact Barcelona only paid 11M for him must make him in our price bracket. In my opinion if you take Ashley’s “every last penny ” speech into account what fat lad meant was we can spend but only when we receive it. By everyone’s calculations it seems around 30-35 M will be spare along with 180K a week in wages at least and if Newcastle can secure Ings on loan early in the window it would allow Benitez room to offload Mitro or Gayle (Mitrovic will probably be the sacrifice. Benitez just doesn’t trust him) and gain another 15M at least. That would see us with around 50M to spend with Ings already on board. More than enough for Rafa to at least sign a top quality number 10 , left back and goalkeeper. If Newcastle were to offload Gayle too I’d expect two strikers joining one on loan and the other hopefully Cenk Tosun. He’s worth the gamble and if it paid off he’s a 20 goal a season striker which is priceless in the PL. Bring on the takeover! HWTL!

If you were buying a business and some
that business’ officers had issues with the tax
man why should it deter the purchase.
The only similar case I can think of was
Rubberface Redknapp was taken to court
    by HMRC .
At no time was there any question
of any clubs involvement in his defrauding the
    authorities.
