Rafa Benitez has already met with Steve Nickson, Newcastle’s head of Recruitment this week to discuss scouting and which players Newcastle will be after in the January transfer window.
To ensure we are a Premier League side by May Newcastle need to bring in some players who can score goals and Rafa is likely to try to get several players through the door in January to improve the overall quality of his squad.
The most important player(s) we need are strikers, and hopefully, Rafa can bring in two strikers this January whether or not Mike Ashley is still the owner by then.
Newcastle have been interested in 26-year-old Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun for some months now and have watched him a lot this season.
He seems to be the real deal who could do a job for Newcastle, but there’s news that Tottenham may move in for him.
So who’s going to be the person who tells Cenk he will not get many games at Tottenham with Harry Kane there?
Cenk would become the number one striker at Newcastle if he does join us in January.
Besiktas are quoting around £17M for the striker, and the Chronicle are reporting that will be too expensive for Newcastle – but at some point, Newcastle will need to pay the going rate for strikers.
We paid £5M for Joselu in August, and although he can lead the line well, we still got a £5M player.
Steve Nickson seems to be doing a good job for Rafa with his team preparing reports on various players from their scouting across Europe.
If the owner is still Mike Ashley come January, then Rafa is likely to bring in a couple of players on loan (it’s cheaper that way) and see how they do through the end of the season.
Rafa can also sell players like Jack Colback and Aleksandar Mitrovic and use the money to bring better players into the club before the summer transfer window.
Hopefully, by next summer we will have new owners in place, and nothing will be able to stop us then.
That’s the hope in any case.
