Newcastle Fans Have Their Say About Jonjo Shelvey For England

What are Jake Livermore and Jack Cork doing playing for England?

They are not even top players for the clubs they play for – but maybe it’s an indication of the players we currently have available for the England side?

With players injured before the game yesterday with Germany which ended in a 0-0 draw – some Newcastle fans were hoping that Jonjo Shelvey would get a call-up, but it was not to be.

And England manager Gareth Southgate said he didn’t need a quarterback for the England side in these two friendly games – whatever that means.

The England International status is less than it used to be with anybody who can kick a ball and look good seemingly at some point called up to play for England.

Jonjo Shelvey – sent off against Spurs in August

We just cannot see England doing well at next year’s World Cup in Russia when we have a manager in place who was mediocre at best in club management and hasn’t been in club management for nearly 10 years when he was appointed as the England manager last year.

Gareth Southgate is an excellent guy, but we should be appointing England managers not based on their character and the fact they are English – but on their ability as managers.

Yes – it’s an interesting concept.

Here are some tweets from Newcastle fans.

Personally I’m pleased that JJ is out of the England reckoning.
When Butland breaks a finger in England training and will miss the next six weeks of the premiership, it illustrates the dangers of the call up, and we certainly can’t afford to be without Shelvey at the moment with Merino sidelined for who knows how long.

IMO Livermore did a decent job as defensive midfielder yesterday.
As with our Hayden, the position is never so eye catching as that of the attacking midfielder, and his contribution can easily be overlooked.
I thought the match v Germany was a good one in spite of the 0-0 scoreline. Both sides had chances to win and the young side Southgate put out acquitted themselves well against a more experienced opposition.

Livermore, Loftus-Cheek and others ahead of Jonjo and Jack Wilshire? You have to be joking. The manager is selecting players he knows rather than do his job properly and select on merit and form. Another weak manager selecting a weak team.

The comment below sums it all up I refuse to believe that even Southgate is thick enough not to see Shelvey should be picked!

“Unless he’s been told he’s not allowed”? #NUFC

I wondered if that’s the case but as has been mentioned in other comments NUFC need JJ more than England do! 🙂
