The Independent are reporting that Mike Ashley looks like he may flatly turn down Amanda Staveley’s offer of around £300M for Newcastle United.
The ball is said to be in Newcastle’s court now, and it seems there has been no official response from Ashley, although Newcastle sources have told the Independent the offer is too low.
But maybe that’s just because it’s below Mike’s £380M minimum valuation?
Mike Ashley seems to want at least £380M for the club and the news was broken by the Times last night, and it was reported that Ashley was not happy the news had already been leaked to the press.
Amanda Staveley has said it was not leaked by her people.
But Newcastle fans will not be happy if the owner gets too greedy and wants too much money for the club.
Fans want him out – it’s as simple as that.
Mike Ashley – could delay the deal
If he sells Newcastle United to Amanda Staveley and her Capital Partners group (quickly), then Rafa Benitez will have some big money to spend in the January transfer window, and that can help Newcastle survive in the Premier League this season.
It also sets up Rafa for having a huge summer transfer window when some really big money will be made available to him, and he will be able to add some class players to the squad.
That’s what is sadly missing at the moment.
But there could still be delays if Mike Ashley hedges on the bid which he is likely to do.
So Mike could really damage Rafa’s ability to have a good transfer window in January if he delays the deal – which is likely.
If Mike Ashley does hold out for an unreasonable price, then our fans will not be very happy since he’s been an absolute disaster as the owner of the club for the last 10 years.
Let’s tell it like it is.
Once any bid is accepted there will still be some weeks that need to be spent back in the due diligence phase by the buyers.
But it seems PCP Capital Partners want everything tied up quickly so that Rafa can get some money to spend in the January window.
That sounds very good to us!
Comments welcome.

Comment #1He’s accepted the 300 mil offer plus instalments!!
It’s just the instalments and advertising to iron out. Press release due tomorrow to confirm all this from what I’m being told.
It’s happening!!!

Comment #5Hey Ed welcome back where you been? Hope all is good in your department.
Some very interesting developments last night. It could be we finally get our wish. But and it was a predictable but, Ashley has refused the 300M offer. Understandably it is the first offer and everyone comes in with a lower offer than the asking price when negotiating. But I really hope this doesn’t drag on and on to only conclude with another false dawn (we’ve had enough of those!). If the price is agreed and other formalities are taking their time I believe it is viable that Stavley can inject money for a good transfer window in January whilst the final details of the deal are being finalized.
Either way it is sounding positive and this will all be resolved soon in a way it suits us very much.

Comment #6“Looks like he MAY flatly turn down et.c et.c” printed in a newspaper does not auto-translate to “likely to turn down”. It’s media guesswork. I still believe Shire.

Given that PCP’s reoortedly undertaken due diligence, looking back to the 90s, will there really still be some weeks that need to be spent back in the due diligence phase by the buyer?
Ashley’s publicly said he’s looking for £380m and he’s said he’s not happy with the offer. Shire’s saying that Ashley’s accepted PCP’s offer offer of £300m plus extras – albeit the structure of the extras yet to be agreed and it strikes me that the terms’ll have to be offered that’ll save him some face. So, if he can be seen to be getting somewhere near the £380 he wants, he’ll be happy. It’ll hopefully a case of there being some tactful negotiations resulting in forms of words such that he hasn’t been mugged.

I would have thought that the FA and/or Premier League would know who the real future owners are as, presumably, they have to be vetted by them and presumably before they actually become the owners as otherwise what’s the point !
I’m assuming Ashley knows as well.

Comment #13Penfold never seems to copy other more experienced MD’s when it comes to contracts. We never hear of bonuses to us for sold players should they win cups, titles etc, nor it would seem sell-on percentages.
Can pretty much guarantee Ashley will be mounting up add-ons in selling the club.
– Free SD advertising for x amount of years
– % of all merchandise sold through club shops
– guaranteed massive discount by SD when buying merchandise to sell in store
He’ll not just walk away for £300m.
Staveley and her group will most likely try to formulate a price at which Ashley walks away without any further involvement in advertising, sponsorship or sundry income from the club. They’ll want total and absolute ownership and I certainly Don’t blame them.
Ashley won’t get exactly what he wants, but you can bet your house he’ll get closer to £380m than £300m.

I think the figure depends upon how it is presented.
The buyer will probably quote the highest price even though there are conditions in various clause depending upon the circumstances in the future, eg relegation, advertising etc
The seller will probably ignore the various clauses and only look at the offer price minus all the clauses.

That’s a bit ridiculous of PCP. Ashley could counter it by saying (although implausible) that if they win the Premier League or qualify for a European Tournament he wants to be paid more.

Comment #20What do Hibbit and Shirebrook really know.
PCP will make a bid.
It will be about 300 million.
Sure they have been saying this for a while.
The Chronicle have been reporting it for weeks.
This is the start of the end game.
It’s not the end.

Comment #23It makes sense on the business side for example,
Mike sells his shares for 380 million which he got offered 300 million plus the 80 million no doubt in instalments as this will keep him in regards with Newcastle meaning he can still advertise his brand as being a shareholder BUT he would need to pay Newcastle for advertising his brand!?
We all know Mike has made millions from us through advertising and it still makes the same if not more, so if this is the case the 80 million could be injected back into Newcastle which will let Mike advertise for X amount of years until the 80 million is depleted.
There’s other ways Mike can keep his brand in Newcastle, shirt sponsor could be included in the deal after fun88 have expired, so Mike could put 40 each on shirt sponsor and adverts for let’s say 4 – 5 years and we all know how he likes his 5 year deals?
Something to think about guy’s
