Paul Merson doesn’t really go out of his way to praise Newcastle United too much, but he seems to appreciate just how good Rafa Benitez is as a manager.
Paul has said today Rafa is probably in the top ten of managers in the world – and we would agree with that.
Paul has come out and talked about the potential takeover of Amanda Staveley and the consortium she has put together to attempt to buy the club.
But Paul thinks there would need to be another £300M in investment the new owners would need to spend for new players – although he doesn’t mention the timeframe of that investment.
Paul Merson – makes sense
He also says that Newcastle winning the FA Cup this year would be a popular win for fans around the country – well except if you support Championship club Sunderland.
We also agree with that!
Here ‘s what Paul Merson has said to Sky Sports:
“Buy the club for £300M.”
“If you then want to be successful ……
“One: You have got to keep the manager Rafa Benitez because he is probably in the top 10 in the world.”
“Two: The other thing, you need at least another £300M to back Rafa with new players – at least £300M.”
“I think Newcastle are a prime example for the FA Cup and I think that if you don’t support Sunderland, who wouldn’t want to see Newcastle win the FA Cup this year?
- Their supporters.
- They haven’t won anything for god knows how long.
“They are middle of the table and they are not getting relegated.”
“They’re also not going to get in the top four, so they should play their strongest team all the time (in the FA Cup).”
It’s back in 1969 when we won the then Inter-City Fairs Cup which has morphed to become the Europa League over time.
And it was back in 1955 that we last won a local trophy when we smashed Manchester City 3-1 in that FA Cup final, which I watched on TV at the time.
To be fair to Paul, what he says makes a lot of sense although we are not sure Rafa needs the full £300M.
If Rafa was given say £100M to spend next summer plus money from players he can sell like Mitrovic, Gayle, Mbemba, Colback, and Saivet – we’d have a much better side for next season with some real class in the team.
Then Paul could even take us to win most weeks with his predictions?
I’m getting carried away again.
What do you think?
