Rafa Explains What Happened Yesterday In What Was A Horror Show

It was just a dreadful display at home by Newcastle yesterday in front of over 52,000 fans against Watford.

The Newcastle side hardly resembled the team that was picking up points nicely earlier this season.

We had 14 points from our first 9 games with a goal difference 0f +2 and were around 6th in the league table.

We have now dropped to 13th place in the league with a goal difference of -6 and still on 14 points.

Rafa Benitez – on the touchline yesterday

Rafa will now be under pressure to get the team playing well again – after all, they are the same players who were playing some solid football earlier this season, and we were so well organized.

This is what Rafa said after the game yesterday:

“We knew this would be a difficult game for us, because they have been playing well.”

“We needed to be strong and solid, but we made a mistake and conceded the first goal. We responded quite well.”

“We were pressing and created a few things, but the second goal changed everything.”

“Then it became very difficult in the second half. We were chasing and they were able to catch us out.”

“We are a team that has to work very hard to get results,” “We have to be aware that we knew this could happen.”

“We knew we could lose some games and we have to analyze a few things and see why things are not going so well.”

“But we knew it would be hard. We are a team that will have to work extremely hard right up until the end of the season.”

“But the supporters, the players and the media have to realize that we have to work harder and stay together.”

“That’s the only way.”

Watford missed a number of chances, and they probably should have scored more goals – so it could have been a lot worse than it was.

Alan Shearer tweeted immediately after the game it could have been 6-0 and called it a horror show.

Maybe we can get a win at West Brom on Tuesday night, but the team will have to be an awful lot better than they were yesterday – in what was easily our worst display of the season.

As Alan says – it was a horror show.

Quite a few left for the bar at half-time and never returned. Then many more drifted away during the second half, leaving about 15,000 at the end, to booboo them off! The crowd and players looked similarly affected – mackemed!!! And Rafa was clearly Pardewed!

    Murphy easily our best player.
Who the bloody hell voted for Ritchie/Shelvey/Yedlin/Clark etc?
Ritchie/Yedlin all over the shop – Yedlin had chance to stop 3rd goal, too, but bottled challenge and allowed Richarlison to keep ball in. Gave up.
We need Dummett at left back, Mbemba at right-back – Lascalles cannot return quickly enough.
Joselu might miss 1, he might miss 2, cannot hit a barn door, so he missed at least 4! Gayle also missed a couple, Perez missed 1, Mitro missed 1 and passed to their player when he should have shot – we had enough chances to score 3 or 4, but simples – cannot score, cannot defend = a good hiding!

Wish I’d been snowed in, in the Lakes – first day, watched us get beat by ManU, in a bar – Yesterday, raced home, to get to match – 😮
Not going to bother reading back further than post match!
Did notice a new ‘Hibbit’s Giblet’ – as well as the usual loons!

I think the takeover talk is having a bigger effect than they let on.Raffa looked lost just after half time.
I would have started Merino and taken him off when he got tired, not the other way around when game was gone.Or do all toon managers get a watch when they get the job that only starts at 60 minutes
Surely Saivet is better than Diame.
    We desperately need a keeper.
The good news for me is when Raffa said he would still be here next year,so he knows it’s going to happen.
    keep the faith

    Toontaff,
I blame Joselu for the defeat. That chance he missed in the opening minutes showed the team and crowd what we’re up against. He is very quickly becoming my all time least favourite player.

Another 2 defeats this week , I predicted only another 4 points 2 weeks ago for the Xmas period and I want to change that to none.
The club must be sold or are we seeing Rafa being tactical by losing, so he is knocking £100m of the sale price so he gets £100m to spend off the new owners in January.

Every goal came from their left hand side. Ritchie trotting about in middle of the park looking like he was looking fur his dog. Yedlin can’t do it all on his own but could have stopped the 3rd. Elliott could have stopped the 2nd had it got down quicker. Bet he goes down quicker if he drops his pasty

It’s a difficult job for Rafa but he’s not helping the situation by picking a certain striker to lead the line every single week. We’re essentially starting games with 10 men.

Joselu’s miss in the second half, right in front of the Gallowgate was a shocker – I bet some posters’ Grans could have controlled and shot home – why did he slide and poke at it?
Maybe Ritchie was looking for Yedlin’s dog? 💡

They were both too static yesterday. Gayle and Joselu. Swear down I saw them holding hands at one point they were that close together. Loved the hoof ball to Gayle though. Thought that tactic worked well 😆

I bet Rafa is pleased to be away for the next
    game.
I think he’s looked at this weeks 3 matches
    Watford , WBA , Chelsea
and picked the middle one as the most
    winnable and will select accordingly
picking his strongest 11 for the weakest opposition
I expect he will do the same with next weeks
    three games
    Leicester Everton Arsenal
and target the Everton home game as the most
    winnable
The crazy thing is , that I’m sure Rafa is aware of
if you pick up the odd win in 3 games it is usually enough
    Draws against each one of
    Watford
    WBA
    Chelsea
    Leicester
    Everton
    Arsenal
would be lauded to the heavens
2 wins in the same six
    same result

I don’t think 4-4-2 is the answer either. To be honest a draw next game be a good result. Confidence is low. Need to find our way. Do not concede and become difficult to break down again. Then a few results might start coming. Confidence will never pick up with Josiére up top however. Worst signing the club has ever made.

    Why can’t we critise Rafa????????

No manager is infallible to criticism where it is due.

Rafa is an excellent manager in his own right, and I applaud him for being the consummate professional in all aspects of his management and setting a standard in training and attitude that dictates who plays.

But come on enough is enough – you cannot keep picking players if they are not performing. It is sabotaging our entire good start. We need bravery in this team as much as we need organisation.

Joselu has to drop to the bench and stay there. We can’t continue to self inflict defeats for the sake of Rafa’s principles.

    Watford played 3/5/2.
We simply did not know how to counter that.

Leguene. If you play in a back four with attacking full backs your centre half will be required to back up the play. In doing so he will end up in wider areas, with space round him.
Leguene is knackered if that happens as he is not quick enough.

But, Rafa recruited him for his 4/2/3/1 formation. I have serious doubts about Rafas recruitment and application of simple logic when it comes to his squad management.

    martoon,
I thought 50 minutes should have been the turning point. Give them five minutes to turn it around which they most certainly didn’t. Rafa seemed like a rabbit stuck in the headlights when it was obvious it needed turning round. Is it stubbornness, not wanting to risk Merino, complete lack of trust in Mitro. Whatever it is we’re in big trouble unless a goal scorer is brought in asap.

No-one played well…the odd touch of brilliance is no good…with a squad like ours every player has to be at 110% otherwise we’ll get turned over every week because we have no goal threat whatsoever and we can’t defend for toffee.

Watford weren’t brilliant…they didn’t have to be…they did the basics well and we were pathetic.

4 bad losses and everyone’s heads have gone.

Like I said 4 weeks ago…if we get to 19 games with 22 points we’ll have done well and will stay up…anything less and we’ll be in trouble.

The way we’re playing now we’ll be lucky to have 18 points and we’ll be in our usual position of hovering just above the relegations slots.

We’re only 4 points from being sucked into the bottom three…this is desperate stuff.
