The Sun is reporting that Newcastle are interested in signing 20-year-old striker Dimitri Oberlin who currently plays for Swiss club Basel – on loan from RB Salzburg.
We have no idea how much money Rafa will be given next month, but if Amanda is still interested in buying Newcastle at that time, it may be even more than £30M reported.
That’s if Rafa can spend that money and players are available.
Oberlin has played for all the Swiss youth sides and 7 times for the U21s.
Dimitri Oberlin – Newcastle in pole position to sign?
In 34 youth games for his country at various age levels, he has scored 19 goals, so he has a good goalscoring record.
But he has also been watched by Manchester United.
In fact, he has said he almost signed for the Red Devils as this was reported last month in Sports Illustrated:
“The transfer almost happened. In the end I decided otherwise. My parents had allowed me to transfer, but I did not.”
“I would have started at the U-18s, the way into the first team would have been far. The competition would have been massive.”
He will not have a lot of competition at Newcastle and would be guaranteed first team football this season at least.
The Sun are reporting that Newcastle are favorites to sign him.
This is an extract from the Sun report as reported in the Chronicle today:
“Oberlin played in Basel’s Champions League win over Manchester United and has been tracked by Old Trafford scouts.”
“But Benitez is in pole position to sign the Swiss star, who scored four goals in the group.”
“Oberlin is valued at £20million and Benitez is looking to boost his attack — but must offload Aleksandar Mitrovic.”
Rafa will try to raise money by selling players next month, and one of them is sure to be Aleksandar Mitrovic who Rafa rarely uses.
Oberlin was born in Cameroon and joined RB Salzburg from Zurich back in 2015.
He has been on loan since then in picking up some first team experience.
He has scored 8 goals in 23 total appearances for Basel including 4 goals in 6 games in the Champions League.
In his career so far he has scored 42 goals and had 13 assists in 115 appearances.
Dimitri would be worth £20M if we can sell Mitrovic because he obviously has quality – something we lack in the side at the moment.
If Rafa is interested, the 20-year-old must be a good up-and-coming player but does he also have the experience we need in the team for the rest of this season?
What do you think?
