Newcastle In Pole Position To Sign New £20M Striker Target In January

The Sun is reporting that Newcastle are interested in signing 20-year-old striker Dimitri Oberlin who currently plays for Swiss club Basel – on loan from RB Salzburg.

We have no idea how much money Rafa will be given next month, but if Amanda is still interested in buying Newcastle at that time, it may be even more than £30M reported.

That’s if Rafa can spend that money and players are available.

Oberlin has played for all the Swiss youth sides and 7 times for the U21s.

Dimitri Oberlin – Newcastle in pole position to sign?

In 34 youth games for his country at various age levels, he has scored 19 goals, so he has a good goalscoring record.

But he has also been watched by Manchester United.

In fact, he has said he almost signed for the Red Devils as this was reported last month in Sports Illustrated:

“The transfer almost happened. In the end I decided otherwise. My parents had allowed me to transfer, but I did not.”

“I would have started at the U-18s, the way into the first team would have been far. The competition would have been massive.”

He will not have a lot of competition at Newcastle and would be guaranteed first team football this season at least.

The Sun are reporting that Newcastle are favorites to sign him.

This is an extract from the Sun report as reported in the Chronicle today:

“Oberlin played in Basel’s Champions League win over Manchester United and has been tracked by Old Trafford scouts.”

“But Benitez is in pole position to sign the Swiss star, who scored four goals in the group.”

“Oberlin is valued at £20million and Benitez is looking to boost his attack — but must offload Aleksandar Mitrovic.”

Rafa will try to raise money by selling players next month, and one of them is sure to be Aleksandar Mitrovic who Rafa rarely uses.

Oberlin was born in Cameroon and joined  RB Salzburg from Zurich back in 2015.

He has been on loan since then in picking up some first team experience.

He has scored 8 goals in 23 total appearances for Basel including 4 goals in 6 games in the Champions League.

In his career so far he has scored 42 goals and had 13 assists in 115 appearances.

Dimitri would be worth £20M if we can sell Mitrovic because he obviously has quality – something we lack in the side at the moment.

If Rafa is interested, the 20-year-old must be a good up-and-coming player but does he also have the experience we need in the team for the rest of this season?

    (love the name)

Very true on that comment, Mike will be sweating as the ball is in PCP half, Mike will be throwing everything at them as he knows Newcastle can make a profit and can become a massive club, I just hope PCP have a limit of how many NO they can say to him before just waiting until Newcastle get relegated again for the price to drop massively?

No thanks and not now and really the Sun!?

This guy may be talented but it’s not what we need right now and considering he’s used as an impact sub it gives no sense as to we would pay 20 million for him!?

Big influx of funds for renaming SJP ala Etihad?

Could asily happen I suppose to circumvent FPP?

Would prove a dilemma for some though who saw name as sacrosanct when Lambiase tried it on.

In Man City’s case of course they were in a stadium with no emotional attachment having left Maine Road for the Commonwealth Stadium( similar to Arsenal new stadium).

Money of course swears so who knows

The amount Raffa will have in January will depend on how much Ashley wants this deal to happen and on how much he wants us to remain in the premier league with or without any possible take over. Quoted amounts are nothing more than paper talk and speculation.

We’ve seen this so many times where he penny pinches in the summer only to panic at xmas when we look nailed on for relegation. The end of his time at NUFC can’t come quick enough

Spot on mate and you took the words out of my mouth with the stadium naming and your also correct that the new owners can put any amount into the naming the stadium and the FFP can’t have a say in it (I think)?

So let’s see if this works.

20 mill for Oberlin + 9 mill from Mitrovich sale if he gets sold meaning 11 million in total for Oberlin with 19 million left for another striker?

It might just work out, though any other player that gets sold will be used to strengthen other areas.

Then again that 19 million could be used to get Sturridge in on loan and a few others?

Think we are looking at Ings, Shaw and batshuayi on loan perhaps with a view to buy in the summer. And money handed over from the tight fisted one and we need a defensive midfielder to protect our defence and a decent keeper

The difference being that when owl heed tried it we received fcukall for the privilege all under the guise of “showing others the potential” similar to what they did with the hoardings plastered around SJP. They couldn’t sell those apparently lol. Yeah right. (We later learn that it’s in fact some form of payment for interest free loan)

Whereas in the scenario Dubai mentioned, we’d receive monies for it.
I’d take it all day long as much as SJP is sacred, we need to compete and that’s an avenue we’d need to look at imo.

I always said the idea of a self sustaining football club was a good idea in general and would be ideal but times change and if this new owner is mega rich and wants to spend it on us then fcuk it, let’s join the big boys because there’s no other way of closing the ever increasing gap.

    Fat slug out!

I could imagine this deal getting pulled off, Sturridge along with Iker and Oberlin for a grand total of 30 million (depends on the wages of course)

    We need to sell

To free up more funds for our full backs and a creative cm (Perez and Merino should battle for number 10 spot)

Yes those 3 as well 😉

It could actually be done and it would massively improve our squad and probably guarantee survival.

Nezza, we desperately need a striker more than any other position, I’ve lost count of the chances we’ve created and simply haven’t anyone good enough to put them away. More often than not you only need to score once against us as we can’t score ourselves.

The entire squad needs a massive overhaul but we need to prioritise until we have an owner will to foot the bill for the massive change

Don’t know much about this kid, but of course any striker worth his weight we will be after in the transfer window or reported to be after I should say. I know Man U want Danny Rose, so that frees up Luke Shaw to leave to come to us on loan with the option in the summer. Talk about two strikers I understand this but we really need a CB, I still feel that Rafa may offload Jonjo as he cannot trust him anymore, that would bring in some good money. It looks certain the Mitro will be leaving, Gayle off to Championship, Aston Villa may be a good choice, they are pushing for promotion and they would have the money to make a deal or some swop plus money deal, they have five CBs and some good wingers.

Let’s look at this in a calm manner.
First, will our beloved leader actually release cash for transfers in January.
Second, how quickly will we be able to get a player over the line.
Third, once we make a move for a decent player other teams will hustle us out of the race.
Fourth, would any decent player really want to come to us given our current relegation place, and sale likely at the moment.
The result being a jubilant owner thinking he’s played a blinder by not spending any cash.

In May the consequences of our parsimonious approach to transfer funds will come home to roost. Relegation loss of TV funds, drop in crowds etc etc.

Oh and the value of NUFC will be a tenth of what could have been raised.
