The Mail is reporting that Newcastle have asked Leicester City about the availability of their Algerian striker Islam Slimani, who we have been interested in for the last year at least.
It seems that Newcastle are enquiring about a number of strikers at the moment and Rafa will want to get two strikers in next month.
That’s to try to improve what is a considerable weakness in the Newcastle side – scoring goals.
Aleksandar Mitrovic is now surplus to requirements, and he could be sold or sent out on loan next month.
29-year-old Islam Slimani – in action for Leicester
Rafa doesn’t use him for whatever reason, so we far better get his wages off the wage bill.
The 29-year-old Slimani signed for Leicester City a year last summer, but he has not been successful at the former Premier League Champions.
But when he has played he’s shown he can score goals.
In 41 appearances he has 12 goals and 6 assists including 3 goals in 9 appearances this season.
He cost Leicester about £25M from Sporting Lisbon, so we expect Newcastle to try to get a loan deal with an option to buy in the summer if he does well.
In fact, it may be a good ploy for Rafa to get some players in on loan next month in addition to some via permanent moves in case transfer funds are low.
Slimani would be an improvement on Joselu, and hopefully, if we sign him he could score some goals for us next year.
He has played 56 times for Algeria with an impressive 27 goals.
Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion, and Watford are also said to be interested in the player.
