Shock Selection – Saivet, Clark, Diame, Gayle All Start At West Ham – Hayden, Merino, Lejeune Injured

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has just named his side to take on West Ham at the London Stadium this afternoon where will attempt to win our first game in 10.

The last time we won was on October 21st when we beat Crystal Palace 1-0 at home and in 9 games since then we have one solitary point.

Henri Saivet – starts with Hayden, Merino and Shelvey out

So Henri Saivet is the surprise choice for Newcastle after just being put up for sale earlier in the week.

He comes in because both Isaac Hayden and Mikel Merino are out injured today – this is a HUGE blow for our chances today – what’s going on?

But it shows we have no strength in depth at all.

And it stresses the fact that Jonjo Shelvey cannot be relied on – because he is out suspended again.

If we survive in the Premier League this season, Jonjo could well be sold in the summer.

This is Saivet’s first league start ever under Rafa Benitez, and Mo Diame is also in the side.

So we have Saivet and Diame midfield – Newcastle could be overrun in central midfield this afternoon – let’s hope not.

I cannot take another loss!

It looks like Lejeune is also one of the players suffering a knock and he is replaced by Ciaran Clark – and this is a massive opportunity for Ciaran today.

A win today is just what we need to raise the spirits of Newcastle fans before Christmas – but it’s going to tough with three starters out today.

The majority of fans today think we can win this game against another relegation contender who have taken 7 points from their last 3 games under new manager David Moyes.

Looks like he’s putting players in the “shop window” so to speak, especially with that line up!

Big game for Henri today, haven’t seen anything from him but he will basically be playing cm by himself. Anyone know if merino, Hayden is injured or suspended?

rafas team selection is baffling. saivet hardly in squad but gets a start? why not mbemba as a defensive midfielder? 2 left footed left back on bench? why not start one to give balance to defence as manquillo on right foot messes up our forward play a lot.

The best part of the West Ham team are sitting on the bench. That Moyes is a good fellow.

Why? Just why? What a shocker. I understand rotation in this period but we will lose our next game by default and this is winnable!!

If we lose this game due to this selection he has so much to answer for.

The more i think about it the more i think rafa does this on purpose to push ashleys hand in selling up or spending. so yep its rafas fault we are in relegation zone. also surprised with west ham team no hernandez or carroll starting. if they were we’d be well beaten by half time. think 2nd half is key as thats when west ham will really come at us

Not his fault there are injuries.

Really hope Diame has a good game, he needs to badly for his confidence.

Saivet inclusion is interesting, let’s see what he can bring.

    Still optimistic.

    Shirebrook

Yeah sure he is, we’re in a position to be considering putting players in shop windows ahead of prioritising 3pts.

    Another odd selection.

If nothing else today it will be interesting to see Saivet. Little to go on as he arrived and was given a few bits of pitch time here and there and then disappeared; went on loan, came back and similarly has been in the background again.
