These Were Newcastle’s Two Best Players In 3-2 Win At West Ham

It was really a great win for Newcastle yesterday at West Ham and an excellent Christmas present for Newcastle fans after we had gone 9 weeks and 9 games picking up just a single point.

It was not only a good win yesterday at the London Stadium but we played well and deserved all 3 points against one of the other clubs fighting relegation this season.

Christian Atsu scored a goal and had an assist in the second half of this game and those 45 minutes were likely the best of his Newcastle career and he continually got the better of Argentine full-back Pablo Zabaleta.

If Christian can keep repeating this type of form as he breaks quickly from defense, he’s going to be an excellent buy for just £6M from Chelsea.

Atsu tops the voting with 48% of the vote.

Christian Atsu – scoring Newcastle’s third goal – he also had an assist

And the talk of the Toon today is Henri Saivet after his great goal – his first for the club – after 10 minutes yesterday and a good all-round solid performance in the center of the field.

Henri played well and scored that terrific goal which shows the technical talent he has.

But somehow Rafa doesn’t rate him and put him up for sale late last week.

Rafa Benitez did say after the game that he was pleased with the way both central midfielders – Saivet and Diame – had played.

Henri got 25% of the vote and surely will get another chance in the first team?

Here’s all the voting for our Man of the Match poll.

I don’t think Man City will be without a midfield playmaker and have to resort to long balls into the box. I also do not want to see Lejuene starting as he dives in too early, but he may have to if Lascelles needs more recovery time.

    Couple of days ago
The Chronicle claim that Newcastle United will now ‘listen to offers for Henri Saivet , Mo Diame, Massadio Haidara, Jack Colback and Rolando Aarons’.

“Henri got 25% of the vote and surely will get another chance in the first team?”

    Probably unlikely Ed.

More like the lad boosted his chances of a decent move. He was in the team by default dont forget.

he played a big part in diame’s goal though.

I hope catchy manages to find some christmas cheer, despite our win yesterday. It sounds like the poor chap is on the edge of some kind of meltdown.

I just don’t buy it that Benitez would keep saivet in the reserves out of sheer stubbornness . Why keep a good player away from a team on a hefty downward slide? Let’s remember this is he same player who couldn’t get a look in under previous illustrious incumbents, at least one of them being catchys hero.

Saivet has been down the order for a reason and I’ll bet Benitez wrote his name on the sheet with an unsteady hand. But he knew it had to be done. No choice.

Great assist from Siem, for Ajax. Neres and Kluivert look very good again.

It was notable because Pardew under
    instructions picked a weak side.
Yet when we won against all expectations
in the post match interview he did his modest
little smile and hinted it was planned all along.
You had to chuckle at his brass neck

    Repost re Saviet:

His passing is far too sloppy to play the cm role. Seems like a great lad and has good physical attributes but can’t be trusted to play cm long term for us.

Re Saivet – I thought his harrying and tackling were good (and obviously his free kicks) but his passing was not so good. I could see him playing alongside Merino or Shelvey in a Hayden type role but certainly not a replacement for the first two!

His positioning was 1st class. Better than the other obvious things he did well. Lost count how many times he got blocks in around the channels. Stark contrast to Hayden who seems clueless when opponents spread play to the wings. Play him with Merino and Shelvey vs City. Lets try to outfight DBruyne, Silva and Fernandinho. Yedlin V Sane gives me nightmares especially after the roasting Masuaku gave him yesterday

His passes look really forced and unnatural even when they are only 5yds. It’s a shame as if he could just pass sideways and backwards without risk then he could be effective as he seems to get in the right place to protect the back 4 well and has pace to hassle opponents.

ATM, its a straight battle between Saivet and Hayden. To me, Henri edges it. Shows how CDM is one area Rafa should look to improve in January. A Tiote type harrier would improve us immensely. Imagine the freedom it would afford Shelvey/Merino

    Last but one blog posted

Could be like a new signing
    God your pathetic

Could be like a new signing was part of Ed’s headline and if you haven’t been taken to task about your comment already, I’ll tell you that your post was disgraceful. Ed Harrison puts much time and personal effort into this blog and I think it’s fair to say that most who look in on it recognise that and wouldn’t issue such a comment clearly aimed at him.

Ed’s got more brains and decency in his little finger than you’ll ever have and maybe you should team up with the other mischievous oiks who sully this blog, set up one of your own and devote your time to spewing your bile at each other. Rest assured, your absence would be noticed – much like a boil when it goes away.

Yesterday was a great result. But let’s be honest, Saivet is poor. Deserves to remain in the team along with Big Mo based on yesterday’s performance but it won’t last.

Let’s not write saivet off so quickly. He produced a better defensive performance than Hayden has ever done. His better positional sense meant our defence was very well protected yesterday and he had 7 interceptions.

Lets give him more chance and see what he can do.

Saivet and Big Mo produced a better combined midfield performance that any combination of Merino, Hayden or Shelvey combination. They lack the quality of these guys though. I think it’s more a case of the other three needing to wake up.
