Surprising Newcastle Team Announced For Tonight – Five Changes

Rafa Benitez has just announced the Newcastle team to play league leaders Manchester City at St. James’ Park tonight.

City have won their last 17 league games in a row and have won all of their 19 games except a draw at home the Everton back on August 21st.

There are 5 changes to the side that beat West Ham, and in comes Chancel Mbemba in place of Ciaran Clark and Rolando Aarons gets a start too with Jacom Murphy on the other wing.

Paul Dummett – first appearance since last August

Paul Dummett finally comes back in at left back and it will be tough first game back for the Geordie lad against the league leaders.

Mo Diame keeps his place although Henri Saivet is not even on the subs bench, and Jonjo Shelvey comes back in – probably because of his experience.

Newcastle have to be competitive in this game tonight if only to protect our goal difference, which could be important if we are still in the lower reaches of the Premier League come next May.

Almost one in four fans think we can win this game tonight.

3 players for us starting that could be sold in January. Mbemba in for his pace .like the look of this line up.

5-4-1. Keep them out for the first half, then plan from there.

Couple in shop window by the loooks of it.

Mbemba and Aarons. Wise in my opinion to save Atsu and Clark for Friday. Was expecting Lascelles to be rested rather than Clark though. He’s not exactly the fittest fiddle. I guess though without him we wouldn’t have a sniff of a chance.

nufc.co.uk are reporting that Diame will be supporting Joselu in attack. I am trying to get my head around who plays where in an apparent 4-4-1-1. Unless Mbemba plays in CM and Dummett as CB—which seems unlikely.

Can I be the first to say I hope we get hammered in the same way we all thought Rafa’s choices weren’t good at The London Stadium.

Hopefully a similar result (no, not an away win).

It isn’t puzzling at all if you think
    for half a second
    Henri Saivet who hasn’t played
    in a game for months
had no chance of being match fit
after playing West Ham four days ago

He’s left out half of our normal starting 11, sad to say but it looks like he doesn’t think we can win it and is saving players for the next match.

We could do with some help from the ref tonight, or are there porcine creatures flying over the Town Moor.

Let’s not kid ourselves, this is a 5-4-1 morphing to a 5-5/10-0 formation. Hoof to Hoser, quick boys catch up if you can. Some players being rested for Brighton I’m guessing. Why Diame? Height and strength needed against man c? Hopefully he can play well again, but I would suggest he looked better due to Saivet’s contribution. We are so slow in the middle today, against quick pass and move? Would like to see more of Saivet and paired with non-Diame, hopefully saturday, but I doubt it.

Happy to see Fernandinho playing, one of the most overrated players I have ever witnessed. Hopefully Fernandinho is being his usual greedy self and sends plenty of long distance efforts over the bar.

Got to think Rafa is keeping players for Brighton game in not starting Gayle (our best striker), Atsu, Ritchie nor Merino – hopefully it won’t be a cricket score

He is a player who should be and probably is fit enough to handle two games in a few days, training is probably harder than playing.

But OK let’s agree that Rafa might feel he isn’t up to 2 whole games, surely he did enough to be on the bench!

Yes I still find his omission puzzling.

    Very strange selection by Rafa.

Immediate thoughts are that he accepts that we are going to be beat irrespective of who he plays and that is why he is resting Ciaran Clark, Mikel Merino, Matt Ritchie, Christian Atsu and Dwight Gayle for the next games which are winnable.

I guess he is giving Dummitt a run out to get him fully match fit.

Lascelles is there because he is the captain.

    Sorry for Saivet.

Saivet cannot be fully match fit – he must be
    k-nackered after the last game.
Good to see Mbemba get a game – could well
    end up as MOM.

Pleased to see Rafa having more than an eye
on the Brighton game at the weekend.
Brighton will have had a bit more than a day
extra to recover from their last match and
THAT’S the game where we must have high
    hopes of 3 points.

For those wondering I think Aarons and Murphy are in for early energy allowing Ritchie and Atsu to come off the bench. Clearly Rafa wants to play defensive and then give them the knockout punch in the second half. Looks like a back 5 to me with 3 CBs pushing Yedlin and Manquilo up the wings.

Some may think its Harsh on Saveit (yes the goal was great) but one mistake like the one he made could start an avalanche vs City. Rafa clearly wants a 1-0 wins with no stupid mistakes

What a weak midfield…No Atsu, Merino, Ritchie or Perez and I think the defence is better when Clark is playing … too soon for Dummett to play especially against Man City first game back …oh no… we will get overrun in midfield

Interesting selection, looks very much like 3 at the back with Yedlin and Manquillo as the wing backs, but we then have Murphy and Arrons who are out and out wingers, plenty of width and loads of pace in that side, l have to admit that at times Rafa frustrates as I feel at times he isn’t brave enough with his selection/tactics, but I will say this now, thank you Rafa, we may get stuffed tonight but what I forsee is an attempt to break in numbers with loads of pace and width in a genuine attempt to win the game, it may go tits up but well done for trying.
