Newcastle had a vital win yesterday to make it 7 points from our last four games, and we continue to beat those in the lower half of the table – and that’s one way we can keep in the Premier League this season.
Most pundits have had a go at Newcastle and at Rafa Benitez this season – so what’s new?
They have to criticize somebody and something to earn their money.
But for once we have a pundit – BBC 5Live’s Pat Murphy (now there’s a good old Irish name for you) – who seems to understand the very close bond between Rafa Benitez and the Newcastle fans.
Rafa Benitez – on the sideline at Stoke
If he can do that and we get new owners in – which seems likely – then things will be really buzzing at Newcastle in the months ahead.
And especially this summer when we expect some outstanding players to be signed.
And why Rafa did the unthinkable 18 months ago and stayed with us even after we were relegated to the Championship.
Pat Murphy – BBC 5Live pundit
Not there’s some commitment to Newcastle United!
Rafa brought us straight back up, and after not getting the players he wanted last summer it will be a huge success if he can keep us in the Premier League this season.
That’s if we can stay up.
BBC 5Live’s Pat Murphy covered the game yesterday, which turned out to be an excellent 1-0 win for us, and this is what he said about Rafa and the Newcastle supporters:
“They love Rafa Benitez anyway. Their fans are fantastic. They play in front of 50,000 plus at home and Benitez is very, very good with the crowd.”
“He is the star, more than any of their players on their payroll. Benitez is the man who will keep them up. He got them up last year, he’s a terrific manager.”
“He’s a Champions League winner, for heaven’s sake.”
“That’s why the Geordie fans love him so much. He’s batting below, if you like, his average, he’s that good.”
“He should be at a bigger club than Newcastle – although Newcastle’s potential is fantastic, of course, it is.”
“I think any fair-minded football fan will hope the takeover goes ahead and Rafa Benitez gets the money he deserves.”
“Because apart from one or two coded messages he’s kept his head down and orchestrated a very, very important victory at Stoke.”
“It’s a classic example of someone who respects the fans – as he did at Liverpool, and Liverpool fans love him as well.”
“It’s a long way back from the Potteries to Newcastle but I’m delighted for them as an objective football reporter.”
“They are proper football fans.”
Great words there from Pat Murphy.
The thing we like about Rafa is when he talks about what he wants to do in the future he sounds exactly like a fan – he wants everything the fans want – namely a very successful football team at a very well run club.
And the facilities and infrastructure that top clubs in Europe have.
Now we need Mike Ashley to fund Rafa Benitez in this transfer window and the owner needs to move quickly to do that.
