Newcastle were after Benfica defensive midfielder Andreas Samaris the summer, but at £17M he was too expensive, and a deal couldn’t be made.
But we reported a couple of weeks ago that Benfica are now willing to let the Greek International leave the club in January.
Rafa seems to rate the 28-year-old, and if the fee is reduced from their asking price of £17M, then Rafa could make a move for the 6ft 2ins central midfielder.
It looks like we could bring in Samaris for less than £10M.
Andreas Samaris – Benfica holding midfielder
West Brom were the other Premier League team said to be interested in the player last summer, and Diario de Notícias are reporting that Samaris has an offer from England.
The 31 times capped Greek International has not been involved too much this season which is one reason Benfica are open to letting him leave.
And the club who have made an offer for him could well be Newcastle.
Rafa wants the players brought in early this month and he has already given his transfer targets to Lee Charnley who we assume is now working hard on getting players into the club.
Since this looks like a permanent deal Rafa would need to know the transfer funds, he will get from Mike Ashley this summer, and that still seems to be an unknown at this point.
If we can get a couple of strikers in, a left back and a central midfielder it would go a long way to keeping Newcastle a Premier League club this season.
We took 7 points from our four festive matches after the huge 1-0 win yesterday at Stoke, and the next game in the league is a week on Saturday at home to Swansea.
That’s a decent chance to win the game and give us our third double of the season after we have beaten both West Ham and Stoke twice this season among our six wins.
We beat Swansea 1-0 away earlier this season.
Things are starting to look up at Newcastle.
