We were hoping to hear some good news about the January transfer window at Rafa’s press conference this afternoon – but we did not hear any.
It’s still the same in that Rafa did hold a transfer meeting last week with the Newcastle hierarchy – assume it was with Mike Ashley on the phone and Lee Charnley.
But he is still waiting for news coming back from Mike Ashley – such as how much will he be allowed to spend in this transfer window.
Rafa Benitez – cool, calm and collected today
Here are some comments Rafa made relating to transfers this month:
“I don’t know exactly what is our budget, so I don’t have any news. “We have to keep working and try to make sure we have our targets, because I don’t know.”
“I have to prepare the team. “We had a meeting last week and had conversations, and I’m waiting now for news.”
“We had the meeting, talking about options targets, and I am waiting for the numbers. I can’t say nothing, no more.”
“We don’t talk about names. At the moment, we don’t have any movement so we are waiting.”
Rafa seemed very relaxed in his demeanor this afternoon given the current confused situation, so we wonder if he knows something we don’t.
Such as the takeover may be close to happening and he doesn’t want to upset the apple cart.
The manager cannot be pleased with the way things have been handled in the last month leading up to the opening of the transfer window.
But he seems remarkably calm and confident given he didn’t like what happened last summer and last January in the previous two transfer windows – and let everybody know it.
It’s wishful thinking yes – but we hope something is about to give, and that Amanda Staveley can agree on terms to buy the club and quickly too.
Rafa needs some funds from somebody to strengthen the squad before the end of this month.
