This saga of Mike Ashley supposedly wanting to sell Newcastle United is dragging on and on and on ……..
Ashley is up against an expert financier and negotiator in Amanda Staveley and her PCP Capital Partners group.
Ms. Staveley has put in a decent offer for the club of around £250M – but no surprise here – Ashley wants more.
It looks like he wants at least £50M more.
He wants more for a club he has decimated over the ten years of his thrifty ownership of Newcastle where the playing staff was always secondary to money in the bank.
Lee Charnley and Mike Ashley
Rafa Benitez is putting up with this delay with extreme patience, and he still doesn’t know what transfer funds he will have available in January.
However, a piece of good news today in the Mirror is that when Rafa and Ashley talked recently it seems the owner agreed with Rafa that the squad needed strengthening this month.
So if that’s true why the delay?
As usual, Mike Ashley seems to be dragging his feet just like he did last January when he refused to fund the two players Rafa Benitez wanted, and we ended up spending nothing.
Rafa is doing all he can to quicken up this process and has given Lee Charnley a list of transfer targets.
The manager is now said to be waiting for the go-ahead from Ashley to implement his transfer plan and aggressively go after his targets.
We hope Mike Ashley gives the go-ahead quickly so we can get some good players through the door who can help us remain a Premier League club come May.
We assume that’s what Mike Ashley also wants because a relegation would knock around £150M off the price of Newcastle United.
