Newcastle have been linked with two new transfer targets today – goalkeeper Martin Dubravka from Sparta Prague and Crystal Palace left-back Pape Souare – both on loan.
And it may be that Rafa can get them through the door in the next few days – now that Mike Ashley is back from his Christmas vacation.
Journalist Simon Bird of the Mirror has been speaking to the Chronicle today, and he says the problem Rafa has is that Managing Director Lee Charnley cannot sign off on the potential transfers Rafa has set up.
Apparently, for every transfer, Rafa has included a business case of why it’s a good deal for Newcastle to execute.
But nobody is signing off on the deals, and Simon Bird says the requests must go to London – to somebody there – Mike Ashley or Justin Barnes or whoever – who has the authority to sign off on the deals.
But nobody is doing that – which is a ridiculous situation to be in.
Rafa Benitez – no wonder he’s frustrated
Exactly how Rafa is putting up with this nonsense from Mike Ashley, we don’t know – but he is apparently hoping that at some point Amanda Staveley will buy the club.
If that falls through and Mike Ashley remains as the owner, we just cannot see Rafa Benitez at Newcastle next season, and the dream will be dead.
As usual, the hard-working Rafa has done his part – as he tries as best he can to save Newcastle from another relegation.
You would think that’s what Ashley also wants since he will lose as much as £150M on any deal he can do to sell Newcastle if we are relegated again.
With Mike Ashley back from vacation today we hope the manager calls him directly and asks him to sign off on some of the deals before some other club moves in and does the deal.
It really is ridiculous – as Simon Bird rightly points out.
Here’s where you can watch Simon explaining the current situation, which is causing the deadlock on transfers.
