BBC football Mark Lawrenson says that Rafa Benitez could well have a second successive January transfer window when no players are brought into the club.
If that happens we will have a serious fight on our hands against relegation but even with no reinforcements, we could be safe with Rafa’s experienced management.
Our opponents tomorrow are Swansea City, a usually well-run club but Lawrenson thinks Newcastle will take all 3 points tomorrow and that would be another massive win for us, if we can do that.
Mark Lawrenson – BBC pundit
It would mean we have done the double over three clubs beneath us in the league table – Swansea City, West Ham, and Stoke City.
But if we don’t get any new players in this month Lawrenson says Rafa will just have to get on with it and that’s exactly what the manager will do.
He contrasts Rafa’s tasks at Newcastle with that of new Swans manager Carlos Carvalhal.
This is what Mark has said about the game tomorrow at St. Jame'”s Park:
Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez is still trying to bring players in – but might have to face up to the fact that this is going to be a frustrating month for him and just get on with things.
Even if they don’t sign anyone, I would still give the Magpies more hope of staying up than Swansea.
Swansea also need new players but I don’t know who they will be able to sign that could make a difference and, from the sounds of it, neither does their new manager Carlos Carvalhal.
If Rafa thinks he has it hard, then he should probably ask Carvalhal what he is thinking at the moment.
Mark thinks Newcastle will win tomorrow’s game 2-0.
You couldn’t really criticize Rafa if he is completely and utterly bemused by Mike Ashley’s thinking not to reinforce the squad so we can avoid another relegation.
But the way Ashley thinks has always been a big problem for Newcastle fans.
Three out of four Newcastle fans think we will win this game tomorrow.

Comment #1We are on 22 points after 22 games
We have 4 home games where we
SHOULD gain all points.
Tomorrow vs Swansea
Southampton and Huddersfield
in March , and WBA in April.
We have a few away games that
we’ll likely get nowt , but also quite
a few that are drawable.
If I was a prospective buyer I’d say
NUFC is definitely worth a punt.

It wouldn’t surprise me if we got more away points than at home due to our style of counter-attacking football.
Wins at Palace, Bournemouth and Watford
We struggle at home to break teams down who tend to play our style at SJP by sitting deep. as we do not have the skill set or patience to break the opposition down. Yes we have Shelvey who can use the ball but ends up playing too deep and is wasted.
Which leaves us a big problem as you pointed out we HAVE to win at least three of the four games and draw the other
which would give us 19 points and 41 in total – GOING TO BE TOUGH to stay up but we can do it JUST!!!!

Not being pedantic here but if we beat Swansea how is it automatically totally deserved. We might score from a blatant handball while Swansea hit the woodwork five times and have two perfectly good goals disallowed. I don’t care either way but just saying like.

Comment #12So no agreement with Staveley with another group allegedly holding back until safety is secured with us being only two points from the drop zone, yet when it comes to transfers we are possibly going to be weaker after January rather than stronger, I knew Ashley was a gambler but boy this is an absolutely huge gamble on his part, if l wasn’t a Newcastle fan I would be looking at his gamble with great intrigue and be finding it interesting, however I’m bricking it and I wish the oaf had never been born.

Comment #16So, Rafa’s expected to sell before he buys? All the trappings of Ashley through his henchman, Barnes.
Over the last three seasons, Ashley’s hands on resulted in relegation. He went hands off for half of last season leaving sing-offs to Charnley and Rafa assembled a squad to get promotion. Ashley put his grubby paws back on the finances and blocked last winter’s spend. Rafa got us up – just.
Ashley’s hands on again, spending severely restricted nay blocked and relegation’s a real possibility again!
Is there no limit to the man’s stupidity?

Comment #26Ash does seem to hang around with some equally dispicable and repugnant characters as himself doesn’t he. Bishop, Barnes, Llambias, Wise, JFK, the Express guy to name a few.
Does Ash really think anyone would fall for this second bidder fairytale. Ed shouldn’t be giving it house room.

Comment #28Something is definitely happening. Someone made a valid point why is there no transfers going out, Rafa made is clear a couple of weeks ago in regards to the players were surplus, i’m sure clubs have come in for our players but could it be that no one signing it off due to a transfer embargo which is standard when clubs are changing ownership.
I personally, think this is a parting shot by Ashley, if the deal is done as people are speculating i wouldn’t be surprised if hes put a clause in there that it can only be announced after xyz date which will result in the Jan Transfer window passing. I must say if we stay up with the current squad of players Rafa has done extremely well.

Comment #29Toney and Arma would be no help at all. I’d back Rafa to keep us up with what we have, but we could certainly do with a top number 9 and 10. I think the group is getting better as the season progresses though, but I’d certainly move on Mitro and Gayle and Colback to help bring a top number 9 and 10 if I could.

Comment #32I hope Ashley (no hope then) reflects on the interview with Lascelles, the club spent £80M on ne players to go with our then new manager Wally McBrolly. On the face of it the money was wasted, but it would appear that a lot of power was held by the established players that had been corrupted by the ethos of the club.
Now we actually have a manager that controls the dressing room, it would be nice to see the same (or half) the level of investment and see some proper progress by the club.

I totally agree, I do admire your optimism by the way, however, I sadly don’t share it as I do not believe that we are near to getting Staveley or anyone else in for that matter, it appears to me as if Staveley is as stubborn and as determined as Ashley when it comes to getting a good deal and as a result I have serious doubts as to whether or not it will happen.
I just hope and pray that your optimism is rewarded, but to me at present the future looks rather bleak.

Fingers crossed mate, I was only three year old when we won the Fairs cup, all I want is to witness a Newcastle captain lifting a cup above his head to then signal possibly the biggest party of all time, that ain’t likely to happen under Ashley, so the sooner he is gone the better.
