Sky Sports are reporting that West Ham are keen to sign Newcastle center-back Chancel Mbemba who has little playing time under Rafa Benitez.
The Magpies are said to be willing to let Chancel go to our relegation rivals and the club are hoping they can do a swap deal involving Hammer’s striker Diafra Sakho, who is available this month.
Mbemba moved to Newcastle in the summer of 2015 for around £10M from Anderlecht, so it will be interesting to see if the deal goes through how much Newcastle have to pay in addition to get Sakho.
The Hammers need a center-back and were after Swansea center-back Alfie Mawson as their top target, but not surprisingly, Swansea do not want to sell.
Diafro Sakho – West Ham striker
Swap deals are a decent possibility for Newcastle in addition to loan deals since they tend to cut down on the ready cash needed to get transfers completed.
However, Rafa will need to bring in a replacement for Mbemba before he can sanction any deal for Sakho, so we’re not sure where that center-back would come from.
We have been linked with center-back Jack Hendry of Dundee recently, and Celtic are also interested in signing the Glaswegian this month.
We do have players like Paul Dummett and Isaac Hayden who can play at center-back, but it seems Rafa will insist on another centre-back coming in before any swap deal is done.
Crystal Palace seemed to be well in the lead to sign Sakho but there are now doubts as to whether that deal will go through – it seems to be touch and go.
Sky Sports reported only yesterday that Palace had agreed a fee for Sakho of between £10M and £12M so maybe it could be a straight swap between Mbemba and Sakho?
The Senegal International has scored four goals in 17 appearances for West Ham this season but has yet to start a Premier League game.
He would be a very useful addition to the Newcastle team – if we can get him.
